In 2032, SEO spambots will *still* be waking up 2005 BP-OT posts about the release of the new iPhone 4 on AT&T.....

In 2032, the manual transmission won’t be offered in any new vehicles. Yes, the automatic/steptronic/Manumatic/Autostick/DCT/etc… shifts faster and offers better fuel economy but there’s something special about shifting.

In 2032, my lousy Knicks will still be lousy.

I'm exactly twice your age and I have to chuckle that you think being 46 is a depressing thought.

Having been there and 25 years more, I can tell you with certainty and personal experience that getting older doesn't have to be depressing. If value to you is no wrinkles and a flat stomach and a wife/SO who can still fit in their prom dress, then you may be disappointed. If you adjust your life and your happiness criteria to be realistic with your age, you have a chance to be happy each and every year and not be in a funk about your age.

Now that our kids are grown, through college, with houses of their own, we are free to travel and do what we want, , when we want, and where we want. When we are home, we get 6 grand kids to spoil and hand them back when we are done.

Life is precious, each and every year. You will see. Good luck!

Some talk about how the world is going to hell and from that point of view, 2032 will be horrible.

I see it a bit differently. While I agree that there are significant problems that we must address, I don't subscribe to the notion that it used to be good and now it's bad. There has been good and evil forever. Just do look up the wars in ancient history and the numbers of casualties. Just imagine going to the Coliseum in Rome and being able to buy a ticket to watch people murder each other.

What is different today is that we all have access through the media of the world's problems 24/7. It's like we are swimming in a toilet and the media is dropping turd bombs on our heads nonstop. Then, we have the ability to sit anomalously behind keyboards and continue spreading our versions of the world to add fuel to the fire. I think we are simply saturated with crap coming at us through a fire hose.

There are many things that are better today than before, but positive news is not popular. At a personal level, I'm better off in every way that I can think of than my parents were and they did fine. In fact, I don't don't know anyone personally who is not better off than the generation before them.

So, 2032 is just 10 years away. I think good things will happen and I think bad things will happen, just like it has always been.

I said it more tongue in cheek truthfully I have a lot to look forward to... more independence from my kids is a big one... and although they won't be totally grown (will be 14 and 10 in 10 years from now), they'll be old enough to have their own lives and give me some of mine back. Beyond that a big one I'm looking forward to is retirement. The freedom to do anything I want. I've already got a list of odd jobs I want to try in retirement that I can't justify doing right now. I doubt I'll be retired in 10 years time, but I'll at least be 10 years closer to it.

Retirement is amazing. I was lucky enough to have my own company for 30 years. Before that, I was lucky to have bosses who let me run. I never felt under somebody's thumb. So, I wasn't desperate to retire. I still love the whole business thing and lean in when friends are talking about business stuff. But, to be free from having any responsibility whatsoever is not even describable. My wife and I are taking off for Europe in October and we won't be back until December. Try that trick while you are working!

I enjoyed working and raising a family. I never thought I would enjoy retirement as much as I do.

Pro tip: Don't be a tight wad, but do pay attention to what you spend. Load up your 401k to the max before you spend unnecessary money. These two moves will improve your financial ability to retire by years.

Odd jobs in retirement for reals! I’ve always dreamed of working in a supermarket. Something about perfectly stacking bunches of celery and carrots into visually appealing pyramids is alluring.

2. Petrol and diesel will cost about 20-30 percent more than today.

3. There will be no more iPhone, instead, Apple is going to enter the realm of biohacking and sell a form of augmented reality contact lenses.

4. Politics around the world are going to get a LOT more polarized than they already are. The EU is going to face an existential crisis due to the rise of the far-right in countries like Poland and Hungary, and the US is going to become a lot more unstable. Progressive politics will become a lot more popular, as they already are becoming, but as a result, there will be an even uglier, more despotic reaction from the fascists.

5. Electric cars will be a lot more common in developed countries, and renewable energy will innovate at an unprecedented rate. Unfortunately, connected cars and overzealous governments are going to kill the driving experience, and people are going to be boiled like a frog in water.

6. Housing unaffordability will become the norm everywhere.
This is the most San Francisco response someone could post 😒.

I want to go into car sales. I think that would be a lot of fun when you don't have pressure of the need to make money. I'd try so many other random things... Uber/lyft driver.. automotive photographer... delivery driver... real estate agent... etc

Car sales would depend on the dealership. High end? Sure. If not, I don’t think I could hide my vomit reflex should someone come in and ask to look at a used Chevy.

This.

All. Day. Long.

Wifey and I went whole hog on our supplemental retirement accounts. Maxing (or nearly maxing) them out every year. That still left us plenty to live on and travel and pay off the house early, etc, etc. But those accounts grew tremendously after 2008 and they've been the difference between "getting by" and "living as we want."

From a technology standpoint, there hasn't been as big a leap between 2012 and today as there was between 2002 and 2012. Just think about cell phones, for example. My iPhone in 2012 was pretty capable, as were my iMac and MacBook Pro (which I still use). I think we still have the same TV as we did in 2012. But go back to 2002 and think about the cell phones, internet access, and computers back then. Huge difference.

I'd love to have my 2001 E39 now. It was so superior to my current MB GLC300 in many ways that really count. Way more fun to drive. Cars are not getting better. They're getting neutered. And that's sad.

All that is my way of saying I haven't got a clue how things are going to look 10 years from now. There may be new leaps in technology like there were between 2002 and 2012, or there may be small steps in existing tech.

I do think that driving will become worse and worse. Self-driving cars are just an evolutionary step towards fully controlled roads where you can't choose a speed or route. You simply punch in your destination and take a nap until you get there. Maybe there's an opportunity there to open a theme park where people (Gasp!) actually pick a gear and steer their cars around a track.

You don't technically have to retire to do some of those things. I went full time in my own business around 2016. Everything I do is online and it's not something that I have to clock in and out or be on call all the time. Most things I can do when I want but sometimes there are emergencies that need to be dealt with but they are rare.

So in 2017 my gf quit her job, I sold both cars I had at the time and bought an F150 and a travel trailer and we spent roughly half the year every year until 2020 traveling around the country.

I could take care of important stuff in the morning if there was anything then spend the day exploring and do other work stuff at night. It worked out great and my gfs job ended up paying her more than her salary to also work as a part time consultant from the road.

While I am not retired I would be very happing doing what I do now for a looong time. I would also have no problem not working at all. I'm rarely bored and can always find something to do.

That does sound nice... although not sure it's feasible for us to do with kids. Maybe in another 17 years when they're both off to college.

Do you guys do more than 401k max out? I don't qualify for roth ira (although I suppose there's a backdoor way), so outside of 401k I do have a separate investment account that I contribute post-tax $ into. Just mutual/index funds, nothing fancy.

It's hard for me to gauge how much I'd need in retirement. I like fancy vacations and nice cars, so I thought perhaps a $200k/year income in retirement (where I'll have a paid off mortgage, no childcare expenses, no student loans, etc) based on today's $ value would be sufficient. But not sure if that's more than I need or just right. For me to sustain something like a $200k/year income I'd need a nest egg of about $5 million invested into low risk accounts that I can pull from at a rate of 4% annually (4% of 5M = $200k).
