I went out looking for an 11x11 white-tail buck, but this is what I saw instead. Sometimes you shoot what you see and not what you went hunting:

so this to me poses an interesting question (sorry for the pun).

what is the rule about how the model and the background should interact?

i think that depends on the look you want and the type of shoot it is. there's obviously no interaction there. my day got totally fucked up by traffic and weather so we didn't get to do what i wanted.

oh don't be mistaken i wasn't ragging on your photo or anything (i just was curious about her interaction with the scene). I'm really just curious as to the approach different people take. Do you dress your model to fit your background (or clash)? Do you choose your model based on the location? Do you shoot shallow DOF to intentionally blur your location? Do you shoot long DOF to include it?

Just curious as to some peoples process on this kind of stuff.

i'm a little too fucked up to get in depth right now. but like i said earlier, it really depends on the shoot, the shot, and what in particular i'm going for. with her, for example, we were going to go walk around the city a little bit and just do some real casual stuff. but then it ended up being overcast and traffic was horrendous. so i went to the water and just goofed off. i tried to do tonal relationships more than anything else.

My friend needed a new head shot for her acting auditions so I offered to give it a try. This is in open shade with a gold reflector held in her left hand. I used the 5D MkII with the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS (love that lens). DxO conversion to B &W using their FilmPack plugin. I used a Kodak 100 model, which is one of 20 possible default B&W formats.

She's a wonderful model and talented lady, so I had very little work to do. She'll probably chose one of the tighter shots that I gave her, but this is my personal fave of the shoot.

Laura

nice

why gold reflector if you were doing B&W though? Isn't gold just to make it warmer?

well i guess to answer my own question it would probably give a broader, less contrasty tonal range in B&W wouldn't it?
