Here's an osprey that's just fledged in the last couple of days. It's amazing how fast they "get their wings" once the finally leave the nest.

Canon 7D, EF 500mm and 1.4x TC hand held:

Fooling around with high ISO again. This is my cheapo 55-250mm IS at f5.6, 1/10 sec handheld, ISO 12800, 200mm, and +2EV. Then PP'd to bring exposure back down and reduce the noise. Not bad for a cheap lens.

EF-S 18-55 non IS plastic lens.
Hows this for cheap?
Cost $40 and $50 ( I bought two, one for me and one for my son in case I couldn't get a 17-55 2.8 for my trip)
F14 hand held.
Same photo as posted in the general photography thread.
I will go back in December when the light will be straight on.

True, but at ISO 12800 it takes a lot of polish.

I'll bet there are osprey within 50-miles of you, but I couldn't tell you where. Driving over to Half Moon Bay I saw some likely looking water and trees. The "birders" will generally pen point interesting bird locations on their web sites.

Up in the Marin headlands at the Golden Gate bridge we have Hawk Hill. They love the updrafts there.

Dave, any idea of who this is? "You are standing on my mouse"

I'm guessing Northern Harrier male. If you've got some other shots that show the back, then look for a white "rump" at the base of the tail, for 100% confirmation.

Nice shot. These are hard because of the back light and you typically need +1EV to properly expose the underside. That'll blow out the sky, but you'll have much better feather detail.

Adrean, that doesn't look like any I've ever seen but I don't get around very much. Nice.

It is an old style water fountain connected to the old water tower in Mannheim, Germany. Still usable and older than any of us

We call the male harrier "The Grey Ghost" because they're so hard to find and shoot. I still don't have a good one even though I see female harriers almost every week. Catching them riding wind currents is your best bet, like you did.

Here's one of my best harrier shots, a juvenile hunting in the snow:
