Pre 1999 vs Post 2000 Differential Differences

Hi all,

Currently swapping a 2JZ into my E39 wagon. I'll have a build thread up soon. I'm looking at differentials to swap in, and a lot of the M5 LSD's say they only work for 2000-2003 cars. Does anyone know what makes the differential not work on pre-2000 cars?

I'm only really worried about it not bolting up with the subframe. Anything else I figure is pretty easily solvable, just worried about having to modify the subframe.
