MN is just as bad. I'm navigating this by trying to move out of MN. Unfortunately the places I want to move (mountains) are the same places everyone from the west coast who is sick of high taxes and the related is moving to in an attempt to escape those things, but then still vote for the same crap.

….and therein lies the rub. It's absurdity! People move from places like California and bring their silly voting practices with them, effectively turning the new place into California all over again.

A person should be vetted coming from places like California. If you aren't registered Independent or Republican, you shouldn't be able move from a blue state to a red state (…and your voting history should be verified; you must be a multiple gun owner too).

Try owning a tree farm in South Carolina and visiting with New York license plates. You are instantly labeled a DAMN YANKEE before you can even introduce yourself!

Remember, this damn yankee had to stop a local good 'ol boy from shooting his foot with an AR-15 over the Memorial Day weekend when he saw a snake cross our path and panicked, and get schooled by that same damn yankee about why the proper tool for that job is snake shot in a pistol.....

Agree 100% on hating the horrid things.
but eh could be way the fuck worse - could be Australia.

It depends where you are in North America - they're (almost) everywhere or nowhere. Ontario for instance, has none.

Meh. Snakes no are big deal. I had a 6 foot diamondback in my garage once that surprised the heck out of me. Coiled up behind a shovel he wasn't very big. Once I started evicting him I realized how big he really was. And he was angry. Funny part is he point of refuge behind a shovel. A shovel being the ideal tool for killing a snake.

I found this little guy in the house. Still not sure how he got in (I have a theory and have sealed that up) but hmmm. I was watching a ball game and our big cat (aka the hunter) began sniffing at a decorative piece of furniture. I figured scorpion cause they love those. So in between innings I grabbed a shoe and picked up the furniture item (which I wish had a name). Cat was VERY excited.

Lucky for it I found it or snake guts and blood would have been everywhere. Wife wanted to call the fire department cause they will remove snakes for you. I'm like what? It's a foot long King Snake. A good guy that can't hurt a human. When I tried to pick it up it remained docile and didn't bite or try to escape. I put him outside and hope he is still around cause they eat rattlesnakes - when they grow up. LOL

Funny family story, ironically from the low country of SC many years ago. I had some relatives take a, ummm, off-course excursion into a swamp while driving on I-95. A nice passing Marine saw the incident, and stopped to help them. He offered to carry one of the women from the car to dry ground. She told him that she was able to walk. He told her that there were water moccasins in that area. She replied that she didn't mind getting her feet wet, thinking that he was talking about shoes. When he told her what a water moccasin was, she screamed "Snake!?!?!" and jumped into his arms to be carried!

Although I'm a damn yankee with the NY license plates to prove it, my neighbors on two sides are hundreds of acres of wooded county parkland and 7,000+ acres of state forest. Bear and deer visits are not unusual, and there's black snakes all over the place here that will stretch completely across the asphalt road on chilly days to sun themselves and warm up. Not saying that I like snakes, because I don't! My experience is that they will generally leave you alone if you leave them alone.....

1ft and 6ft ehh? Piffel! Now this is a snake. 18ft 9in of Big Momma Burmese Python captured in the glades west of Miami. And they can get even larger than this. They are overrunning South Florida, and eating everything in sight. I have seen about a dozen or more over the years, and even ran one over accidently (not this large). I still feel bad about it. See what you have to look forward to Packet.

Ontario has lots of snakes. The Massassauga Rattle Snake is pretty common in the Georgian Bay area. When I was living in Tobermory we'd get a few bites every summer. Generally didn't administer anti-venom because the reaction to that was often worse than the bite. https://www.ontario.ca/page/massasauga-rattlesnake

Love it. Seen them in Thailand. While they don't really want to mess with humans (like rattlesnakes) they do send a chill down your back if you see one up close.

Scariest snake I ever saw was a King Cobra. I would guess it was 12 to 15 feel and thick around as my arm. I am standing on a golf course waiting to hit into a par 5. My buddy and I are walking and our partners are two elderly (70s) British guys in a golf cart waiting 40 feet away in the middle of the fairway. Suddenly, both caddies standing on the back jump off and run away screaming. The two guys in the cart stay frozen as the Cobra slithers up and over the first guys lap, then onto the second guys lap, and down onto the ground and leaves.

No one was hurt but goddamn that was a scary thing. It disappears into the jungle the poor Brits stagger out of the cart and I'm afraid they are going to have heart failure. But, stiff upper lip and all they finished the hole (it was 18). Mind you they both 3 putted and were shaking. I think one changed his flight and left Thailand early. I know both changed their tighty whities after the round.

The defund the police idiots should be made to watch this video along with being required to do a ride along with a cop. The author, Sean "Buck" Rogers, of the video is a former Green Beret who's done action in Afghanistan and is a former Denver police officer. He quit because of all the defund the police stupidity along with all the in fashion disrespect of the police.

Why do so many highway patrolman drive around (or sit on the shoulder with) their radar guns running? Seems like it gives their presence away to speeders using a detector but then I wonder if it's a safety thing to slow down the traffic around them? My apologies if you've answered this before.

Well radar is a different technology than LIDAR. If you are observing an officer/deputy with a LIDAR gun in hand, it doesn't emit a signal until the trigger is depressed (…e.g….like turning a light switch on and off). Even if your detector is able to pick up the transmitted signal, it's already too late. The LIDAR beam is sent directly at a moving vehicle and the signal received is specific to the target vehicle, unlike radar. Radar - which is technology we rarely use these days - does emit a constant signal and is easier to detect.

I recall you mentioning lidar in an earlier post though not sure if it's in use up here. At least in Washington and Oregon, Ka radar seems to be the standard for the highway patrol. I thought i saw some Ka used by CA highway patrol on my last trip down in the spring.

The CHP patrol vehicles are equipped with radar, but it's not a handheld device. The radar devices are positioned at the base of the front/rear windshields. The handheld devices are the LIDAR guns. Our Sheriff Department Ford Explorer patrol vehicles don't have radar; some of the older Crown Victoria's do. I run LIDAR exclusively.

I live out in the sticks on a 2 lane road with zero side traffic for 8 miles. Speed limit is 45. People regularly creep up to mid 60s. And every once in a while the sheriffs dept runs out here and hands out some tickets in a vain attempt to stop it.

So I play the game and usually set my cruise control to about 52-53. If someone climbs up my ass I ignore them. There are some passing areas and if they want to go faster more power to them.

Yesterday going into town I got a large pickup pulling a horse trailer capable of holding about 8 horses right up my ass. I ignore it. Come over a rise in the road and there is the sheriff. Other side of the road and I think just finished giving out a ticket. I instantly slow to 45 from 52. I KNOW if he was using radar or whatever he got me. Stay at 45 with cruise control and watch the read view. Damn. He does a u-turn.

Follows me and giant pickup for 4 miles into town. Never pulls me over. I think my strategy of 52 is working well.

Radar can't differentiate and will reflect off the larger target; he probably got the truck. AFAIK, the officer is supposed to correlate the radar reading with what he sees. There's the classic tree clocked at something like 60mph.

Unless the radar technology police use is better than what I used in the FAA...

You're exactly right! With radar you have three readings, which include [u]your[/i] speed and the speed of the largest target. You have to interpret the readings.
