Manual transmission owners...how's the hill start assist?

I think this is a really tight feature...how is it in reality though? Pretty cool or useless? Does it just work on incline? What about if you are facing downhill and want to go in reverse?

I just picked up my new 330i today and I must say the hill-holder is perfect The car doesn't move back an inch and it so convinient... haven't though tried the idea of reversing you mentioned.

I'm sure once the car senses that you throw it into reverse, it will disengage the brake. This is a real innovative idea though, eliminates holding the e-brake to cheat going uphills.

it doesnt work when the car is in reverse...and it holds the car for about 2 and a half seconds....wich is more time than you need....it is really really great...i love it...

works really well too...you have to come to a total stop though...if you just kinda roll up to a hill and then sort of half stop it wont engage.

Yes, it DOES work in reverse

If your car is facing downhill and you engage reverse, the start-off assist DOES work. However, it does not engage if you put it in first and are moving forward - no need for it then.

No, that is the part that makes the wait bearable!
I have a little more than a month to wait, I love these bits of info.

I like the feature, it works great. If you keep your foot on the clutch for about 3 seconds with no brake then it disengages and the car rolls back.

Unfortunately the 320i and 320d do not come with the Hill-Start-Assist feature.

It is only in the 325i and 330i. It is one of the 5 additional DSC features found only in the 6 cylinder E90's. The other features are Brake-Standby, Brake Drying, Fading Compensation, Soft stop.

ahh crap. I was gonna get a 325i but the wait is too long, and that torque in the diesel excites me so much. Another issue is I am a student and rising petrol prices in SA are killing me softly. I drove the diesel today, loved it (although i drove an auto)

You are right.... the torque in the 320d is absolutely fabulous... I test-drove a 320d Auto on Saturday... The take-off was amazing..... before I knew it, I was at 160 km/h... it was absolutely effortless to get to 160km/h.... I'm sure the manual is even better in terms of fun.

I've driven Auto (today) and manual (last week). The manual box suits it slightly better, as i feel the auto tries to hold on too long (with my foot flat). I love the feeling where it throws you back into your seat!
I also test drove a 330i A (I've been going from dealer to dealer, trying each one...i can't get enough). That 330 sound is awesome, it's just a tad out of budget for me. And I wouldn't be able to afford the petrol with my heavy foot. BTW when you get your car, try it out on sasol duel-fuel/unleaded. I really find it gives the car (my 325ti) a bit more of a kick
