Waze and other map apps

I use Waze, but it's not perfect. This thread is about Waze, Apple maps, Google maps, and any other map and traffic apps.

I wonder why, once or twice a week, waze is devoid of traffic, accident, and police reports?

I use google sometimes, but still prefer a standalone GPS unit.

For no rational reason, I don't like Waze.

i dont like it because i hate the way it looks. the GUI is too cartoonish

That's why I like it too. But once a week, it seems it will only do directions, no other alerts. No discernible pattern to when this happens

I too like Waze for the traffic alerts but I find myself using navigation just for the last part of a trip where I need “last mile” instructions and all of these solutions will give you a different result. I’ve had each one tell me to take turns where you can’t or direct me the wrong way down a one way street etc.

I have android iDrive and Waze is permanently running. Saved me from a ton of tickets!

Waze's UX is so awful I have no words but as long as it has fairly reliable cop markings it's the only app I'll use.

I use in dash Nav for directions whenever necessary, as well as traffic. I keep my phone in the center console and run Waze for LEO notifications. I’ll sometimes use Google maps on my iPad if sitting on the couch and looking for an idea of distance or route for a trip.

I don’t use Uber or Lyft on a regular basis but have noticed all the drivers seem to use Google maps.

Google Maps for the win.

Waze is good for spotting police, but like another poster said, the cartoon look of it drove me away from it (pun intended). It is soft looking and isn't very user friendly. The UI (user interface) could be much more simple and the actual movement of the map itself (zooming in/out, rotating, etc) isn't refined as well as say Google Maps or even Apple maps for that matter.

I use Google Maps which is far superior to Apple Maps and it does very well with traffic alerts, but I do wish it could offer police alerts like Waze has. I don't see that happening though because Waze is user driven (other drivers put in alerts) and Google Maps isn't for the most part.

Now adays, many GPS or map apps will show traffic alerts, that's no longer just a Waze thing. However, Waze is unique in the sense that it relies on other users to keep the app going (much like Facebook- without you putting in your information, there wouldn't be anything to see).

Correct, it cannot. There's a very small number of apps that are compatible with Apple CarPlay. Apple does that for a reason; 'Apple Maps' is a direct competitor of Waze so they'll never allow it to integrate into Apple CarPlay.

If Waze's functionality was added to what GMaps already did I think that would be the ultimate solution.

I tend to use Waze, as I use it mostly for the alerts. I've never liked Apple maps.

I am not aware of any way to show Waze on iDrive. I only listen for alerts through Bluetooth - I don't look at phone screen.

There is a third party solution that installs an Apple TV in your dash so you can mirror your screen on I drive and use any app.

I use waze for the speed trap alerts, carpool/rideshare and the creative routes to avoid traffic (not always faster).

When this happens, just exit the app, close it in the "background", wait a few sec and reopen it.

Interesting. Does it let you use the iDrive controls to use the app / navigate iOS as if you were using the phone screen?
