Levorg-based 271 hp WRX wagon for Australia. Subaru bosses probably think that Americans don’t like wagons. Instead they love sedans with heavy plastic cladding.

It all looks good, too bad its CVT ONLY. Laughable decision by Subaru.

Yes, a 5/6 speed version of the Levorg would have been a winner, but we can all see how amazingly well wagons sell here, pretty sure its the same reason the VA gen WRX doesn't get sold here as a wagon/hatchback

They are just as bad in regards to reliability as like Nissan, Subaru also had to extend the warranty on them because of premature failures. The reason the Japanese love them is because they are cheap and help attain higher fuel mileage. There's a reason the Japanese never really dabbled in DCT's and it's because they are very frugal when it comes to adding tech to vehicles. Subaru is one of the cheapest Japanese brands as they haven't even invested in a proper torque converter automatic for their more expensive models like the Ascent or WRX/STI. If Subaru was proud of their CVT's they wouldn't try to hide them from general public by omitting the words "CVT" in all their sales literature and calling it only a Subaru Performance Transmission with the WRX.

Not an attractive car but in the TH review it doesn't look as bad as before.
It doesn't sound like anything remarkable to drive relative to its segment. They mentioned the steering is light even in corners and has no road feel. Interior is typical Subaru plastic everywhere. Aside from AWD and option for a stick, I don't see the appeal of this car.

That's the first thing I said about mine For real though, this sucks. Can't say I'm surprised though. They couldn't make anything competitive enough so they just cancelled it. After the crap ass attempt at this new WRX, I'm not sure it would have even been any good anyways. Still pisses me off they didn't even try. At least make a final edition and model year of the current gen. Don't just stop making it then pull this crap. Flaws or not, the STI deserved better.

Idiotic decision by Subaru - STI is a very low volume model for Subaru and would have limited impact on emissions. They also would be using same engine as WRX just with more boost.
Really confusing decision. |

Not that I would have considered the car, but it is sad to see these cars going away.

Rumor has it that Subaru was having issues getting reliable 300+ hp out of the FA24 and the EJ257 would not meet 2023 EPA changes so rather than sink money into modifying the FA24 for a single generation they decided to skip. I expect the next STI will come out in around 2028/29 and be a Toyota based EV.

I started thinking about what I would have liked a next gen STI to be based on the current WRX, and honestly it wouldn't have taken much: - FA24 with bigger turbo, 6500+ RPM redline, and 330HP (anything more would be great, but trying to be realistic) - Adaptive dampers from WRX GT - Same Aisin transmission, DCCD, and diffs from the outgoing model, with bonus points for a new rear torque vectoring diff to help rotation - New front bumper based on the VIZIV STI concept. - Paint the lower rocker panels body color. Leave the unpainted fenders if absolutely needed. This again follows the VIZIV STI concept. - Big wing, with delete optional. - A revised rear bumper would have been nice, but for the sake of this post, could have been left out I'm no engineer, but I don't think any of those changes would have been groundbreaking enough to cancel the model altogether. I think it would have been generally well received if it drove well and the tuning potential was there. Regardless, I was definitely a little bummed out all weekend after seeing the announcement. It was pretty depressing news that is more of an indicator of the era we live in and where we're going than anything else. I purposely bought my 2020 when I did because I had a feeling the new generation car would lose the old school feel of the VA generation. Turns out I made the right call. At the time I called it the oldest new car you can buy today. And now it's finally discontinued. It pisses me off that Subaru didn't even try to launch something or even send off the old STI properly. It's more of a kick in the ass on the way out. The STI deserved better than that.

Like you, I'm bummed that they didn't even really send off the car properly. Just a letter that says, oh btw, no STI coming until next gen essentially. The STI did indeed deserve better than that, coming from someone that grew up in the Colin Mcrae era. P.S. The STI's already hold their values well, I expect yours to maybe even appreciate already.

Fortunately, both of them will never be my DD, so I'll be able to keep them in good shape and enjoy them for years to come. I want my kids to experience them when they're of driving age to show them what cars used to be like, what driving used to mean and how it made you feel revving out an engine and executing the perfect shift with a smile on your face. How they used to make 'em before everything became a toaster that just takes you to work and back. The good old days.
