F31 Privacy/Tinted Glass or Not
I just wondered if anyone has an F31 M Sport without the Individual Sun Protection/Tinted rear windows that could post some pics (or link to them)? I'm in two minds as to whether to add them or not - they do (IMO) make it look a bit more sporty but I'm almost 40 and I'm not really sure if the drug dealer look suits me any more I've seen plenty of pics of M Sport F31s with the priv glass but there doesn't appear to be many around without it.
On the flip side, I'll be occasionally using the car to transport two dogs and I think that this option would make more sense to keep them a little cooler/less exposed to direct sunlight on the few days a year that the sun's rays manage to penetrate the clouds over the West of Scotland. That said, I'm sure there are third party alternatives (blinds etc) that could probably suffice for this. Any thoughts/opinions/experiences regarding this? |

Tinted windows everytime for me. Much sportier look IMO. Have a look at AUC on the BMW site - they will have side profile pics of similar cars with and without

I would almost automatically tick the option box if I was ordering a new one and would likely get one tinted if I bought a used model that didn't have the option.
Does make the car look a lot better and does have some practical benefits too. Go for it ......... |

I have been deliberating this option myself. The privacy glass suits the F31 much better than the F30 in my view and gives it a sporty feel as you say.
The look of the rear of the car is much better with it and hides the weird dark band around the inside of the rear screen, but from the side on it gives the lines of the car a slightly dis-jointed feel. I also found when i test drove i struggled to see out of the windows a little in low light conditions but it was the first time i had driven a car with privacy glass so maybe a case of getting used to it. On balance I am erring on the side of getting it. I have a young baby and it looks awful having a blind up in the window. There are quite a few pictures of the F31 on the approved used listings with and without the privacy glass. |

Never mind what other people might think, fact is it makes the back of the car a much more comfortable place to be for rear passengers be they kids, dogs etc., plus on sunny days if you can park with the tinted glass facing the sun, it'll help prevent it from being a sweatbox when you return to the car.
Besides, it's only a drug dealer car if it's got polished chrome rims, ALL the windows are blacked out, and it's a Range Rover! Go for it I say

Thanks folks, found a few examples online without the option and it does look a lot better with so it's going to have to be added methinks.

Do it I ordered it on my F31 (Mineral Gray), IHMO it looks great. I had the BMW blinds on my E91 and they were a bif naff (kept falling off); so I went for the SPG on the F31; also seems to keep the car a bit cooler than the E91. One thing I would say is the SPG doesn't block out all the glare, you would need both the blind and SPG to be effective. Last edited by kitster; 05-15-2013 at 12:17 PM.. |

Also, obviously despite leaving a widow ajar if you do leave your dogs in the car for a short time you'll be able to use the My BMW Remote App or the programmable air recirculation facility to make life even more comfortable for the pooches ;-)

Good point - I hadn't considered that (well obviously I would leave the windows slightly open but hadn't thought about the Remote App aspect)!

Just reminds me how ridiculous someone looks wearing sunglasses in the middle of winter which seems to be most of the time in the UK.
Each to their own and all that jazz.

Should come as standard in my opinion... wouldn't order a car without it. More practical too. Blimey did I just use that word.
Cheers Mat

I have to add my vote to the anti camp. The two rear windows blacked out and the front one clear is just an aesthetic disaster. On a black car it would make your pride and joy look like it should only be used to lead a funeral cortège.
Not really any practical benefit either with Scottish weather... PS does the car come free with a widow? |

Last few years I've found sunglasses essential as the sun is so low in the sky the blinds do bugger all. Also polarized glasses are fantastic for cutting out reflections off the ground and the windscreen.

you can always tint your car windows later. I come from Down Under with very strong and UV intense sunlight in Australia. Almost every car is tinted for hot and bright days all season.
The tinted option from BMW don't include the front two side windows probably due to laws in various countries. If you are a distance driver like i'm in Australia Sydney-Melbourne few times a year for 900km boring straight line then it's worth every cent to have the windows tinted. |

Another against - whilst I normally like tints, the BMW has slight tints all the way around but way too heavy tints for the sun protection / privacy glass. Sporty without. Panel van / ned's Corsa with.
