Any Traeger experts out there? Having issues

I just recently bought a junior to fiddle with but it's having some issues. The controller and firer box were just replaced. When I start it up and put it on smoke, the temp will go up to 275. If I set the temp to 275 it will go strait up to 360ish then down to 225ish. The temp probe also looks new.

the temp will swing if you open and close the lid, does the temp stabilize if you leave the lid closed?

the only way the temp is controlled is with the auger speed, so it does over shoot etc

I'm not sure if your model has a way to change the P-Setting (controls the auger cycle) but you can read about it here: http://tipsforbbq.com/Definition/Traeger-P-Setting

We have the smaller one from Costco and it does tend to have around 60-70 C swings, and a lot more if you tend to open the lid. For example, if we set it to 225, it will go up to about 260 and down to around 190. One thing we learned is to minimize the lid being opened, and not to check the meat inside too much.

Hmm, I may try running it tomorrow again. I didn't realize large temp swings weren't uncommon. I will also check the p-setting.

Update. I removed all pellets and vacuumed out the anger and fire box. Put new pellets in and set to smoke to start it with door open. After a few minutes I increased the temp to 225, put brisket in and shut the lid. The temp will go up to 360 then down to 140 then back up and repeat. Outside temp is 55 and I haven't opened the lid. Also the P setting is on the default P2.

I always run it on smoke for 5 mins, then close the lid and let it sit 5-10 mins before adjusting the temp. If you adjust with it open it'll just pour a bunch of pellets in trying to heat up
