We have one on my wife's 2012 Audi Q5 that runs until 2019 or 2020 (can't remember right now) and is transferable if we sell the car before them. There is a dealer in CT that sells them for about 40% less than local dealers.

If I buy my M4 at the end of the lease I'd price one.

Rarely on a car - but have. My wife can put 25K on a car in a year, so...typical 36K warranty is up in a year and a half. I went extended on a Ford for her...but had a "don't use, get your money back clause". For my Jeep, it came with a free 'lifetime warranty' - although it requires to have all service work done at the stealership (oil changes, etc). With a 2014 that now has 67K on it...I can say the service work has added up considerably $$$$, and with 0 issues, I'm questioning the 70K service interval. Only advice I can offer...make sure it's transferable...as if you don't use it and ditch the car, it could be money not so well spent. Also, you need to read some of the fine print...may find out you need to do specific service work, or have the work done by their mechanics (warranty provider...not the dealership).

Only other item I bought an extended warranty on was my underwater camera (actually, wife got it, not me). Sadly, I left the battery door open on a dive in the Galapagos Islands and toasted the camera with water. Warranty paid it off in full...so, money well spent.

If I feel I need an extended warranty for a car I probably wouldn't buy the car. The N55 is a pretty dank engine, hence why I feel fine with just the factory warranty.

For other items I save my money too. I'm in a nice situation where I know my way around both a wrench and a multimeter (if you know what I mean) so when something does crap out I'm not stressing over fixing it.

Cars break sometimes or aren't properly maintained causing premature failures by ignorant operators.

Yes, even the most reliable cars need oil changes and routine maintenance.

How do you tell which ones are getting routine maintenance versus fixing broken parts?

Sure, when your car is only worth $14k-$15k and you have a drive train failure, just buying another one makes sense. When it cost $15k-$20k to replace a drive train failure in your vehicle that is worth two or three times more is when it becomes valuable.

What car costs $15K-20K to fix in a single incident?
