Munich

Going to be in Munich the first week of May.

I'm there for 6 nights, but might go to Bamburg/Nuremberg and possibly Salzburg as well. Should I do the trifecta of the BMW Welt, Museum and Plant or focus more time on one since my time might be limited?

Any suggestions on things to do in or around Munich people can recommend that aren't tourist traps?

Thanks.

If you're into palaces and castles and such, Nymphenburg is cool. So is Neuschwanstein, which is an easy day trip. If you're not into that stuff, skip it. Nuremberg is awesome, but you'll need more than a day there. BMW Welt is a must. Never done the plant tour, so I can't speak to that.

I'm good with going to see all 3. Worried that the type-w will not be as enthused about spending one of our days as a BMW day.

Do bmw welt/museum/factory tour in 1 day. Thats easily done (short day). Try to get a tour in the museum.
Send the type-w out for shopping.

München is a big city, but tbh I dont think its that special for sight seeing, so I certainly wouldnt be staying in München for a week.
(obviously there are a lot of musea in such a large city, so its not that there's nothing to do...)

I used to live in Schwabach and worked for UPS in Nürnberg. Man I miss those days. Nürnberg is one of the world's coolest cities.

Have you seen this thread of mine? Plenty of nice places and things to do with the wife.

Places to visit near Munich while on ED...
http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1170588

While the BMW factory is cool to visit... it is a bit much(three hours). You might want to skip it. Personally I think Leipzig is BMW's coolest(& most modern) factory. Makes the Munich factory look like a shoebox. The Welt and Museum are must see's. Also walk up the street to BMW Classic and checkout some of the cars in the shop there.

What about visiting BMW Lenbachplatz ? It's downtown and can been seen in just an hour or less. Think of it as a mini BMW Welt.

Bamberg and Nuremberg are really nice places to visit. Heading South into Austria is also nice. Kufstein or Southern Bavaria are very picturesque.

IF you go to Bamberg be sure to check out either the Spezial-Keller or the Wilde Rose Keller up on one of the seven hills of Bamberg. Spezial-Keller has a great view of the city with good food. The Wilde Rose, has a very old school charm to it. I love both places. https://www.google.de/maps/dir/''/Sp...01!2d49.884708

Bamberg has over 200 breweries in(side!) the city limits. The triangle(area) formed by Bamberg, Nuremberg and Bayreuth has over 2,000 breweries - a Guinness world record.

You can also go to the tourist office and ask for the key(free!) to the Geyerswörth Schloß. You can go up the old watch tower for a breath taking view of the city. I'm not totally sure IF they still do this - but its worth asking! https://www.google.de/maps/dir/BAMBE...49.8909351!3e2

We were there last summer and nuremburg was my wife's favorite place. She spent 2 days just walking around and sightseeing. She didn't join us at the Welt and factory tour, but the museum was closed on Monday.

I've been lucky enough to visit Munich a couple of times and was there last July.

Whilst it is a great city there really isn't a lot of sight seeing in the city itself and I can't imagine spending a week there. Plenty of beer and pork knuckle to be had though! Love a Weiss beer.

If you're into football you can tour Bayern's stadium?

My Son, W type (love that) toured the Welt and did the Museum by myself. To be honest I was a little underwhelmed by the Welt, just a big car/bike showroom. I did enjoy the 100 years of BMW in the Museum though.

I would recommend taking the trip to Salzburg, again not a great deal there but do make sure you take the finicular up to the fort.

I'm happy to admit I'm a Sound of Music fan so I loved seeing all the places in the city where it was filmed. My Son even got to play with his band in the Mirabell gardens.

If you are a foody there is a resteraunt in Salzburg which serves all the dishes in cones, can't recall the name but the food is exceptional.

We plan to go to Nuremburg next Christmas, heard it is one of the bets cities in Germany.

Have fun!

If you want to see some interesting things more, visit the German museum into Munich, but you'll need more time to see it all inside there. But to get a superficial catch, its good.

Yep, most museums are closed on Mondays in Germany. Including the BMW Museum.

Which museum do you mean? The Deutsches Museum (Technology Museum), just past the Isar Tor(downtown area)?

Also in Salzburg is Red Bull's famous Hangar-7! Its on my to do list! A lot of the world record stuff is on display there.

Also for our "other halfs" down past Kufstein, in Wattens is the Swarovski Kristallwelten. It's pretty cool place to visit for a few hours.

I just got back from Munich... like literally 2 days ago.

First time in Germany. Did a big road trip.. Frankfurt, Stuttgart, over to France, back to Munich, Nurburgring and then back. Most memorable for me was driving the Black Forest high road and driving the ring.

Munich has a lot of things around the area. Definitely worth a trip to the Dachau concentration camp. It's a powerful reminder of things that should never happen again. I drove to Neuschwanstein castle... but I was only able to see it from below. To get up to the castle, you need tour tickets and it was completely booked up until 5pm (I arrived at noon)... so I took some pictures from the outside and took off. A TON of tourists! So many tour buses and tourists clogging the area. If you want to go, book tickets in advance!

I felt the BMW Welt and Museum was a bit of a let down. If you go to the Mercedes museum and the Porsche museum, the BMW one is very sparce. Mercedes museum is a lot bigger with a ton more history and cars. The Porsche one has a lot of drool worthy cars. BMW museum... it was ok, but pales compared to the others. The Welt is just a giant BMW dealership.

I believe that they have now moved their event to Regensburg. Street Culture wore out their welcome in Nuremberg a few years ago. The Polizei was all over the crs there impounding cars that had illegal non-TUV approved mods done to them.

But in Munich the Motorworld has now opened a new location to the public. Its only a few miles from the BMW Welt - and promises to be a real mecca for the car world people like us.
