Dirt marks under door sills
Does anyone else get these marks under their doors?
My car gets them and when I wash them off they come back within a week and they're really hard to get off. What is it??

You are correct. It looks much worse on a white car. |

The coloration is the rustproofing they put in the doors leaking out. Keep washing, it gets less, but hasn't gone completely away yet.

Yea, it's the protective coating I think. I have it too.

After washing I use a tyre pressure hose (my mind has gone blank and can't think what it's called) to blast any water out from all the little nooks such as around the doors, mirrors, grill, lights etc.
Otherwise you just have to make sure to dry those areas well.

I think it's a combo of the protective coating applied during shipment and maybe a bit of hinge grease. You just have to keep cleaning it off, and it will lessen over time. Not desirable, but normal.

It's also a collection point for road grime that can't be easily washed out.

i don't wash my car a lot, and with the snow and ice...doesn't help either. Probably just rain/melted snow flushing out some oil and dirt..I don't really notice it but I have clear bra installed in the entire rocker panel...

I believe it is a wax-like rust preventive product running out the drain holes at the bottom edge of the doors. If you open your doors and look along the bottom edge you will find small slots along the bottom with this waxy gunk running out. These holes are to allow condensation to run out of the inside of the doors.
I got some solvent and cleaned the waxy substance off from around the outside of those drain holes real well, and that seemed to help prevent the drain marks down the outside of the car. |

My '92 525i still does this 14 model years later. Honestly, I don't think it will ever go away. When you combine the polluted rain with a car that has collected dust you are going to get this.

I find that opening and closing the doors a couple of times when chamoising the car off when washing tends to flush most of the water out and stop the immediate formation of these marks. Also having a good quality wax on the car helps when cleaning it off.

My car is 6 months old and has 14,000 miles and it finally stopped. It was a real problem at first. I read about it being that rustproofing in the doors and you can actually see it clearly dripping under the doors from a hole in the door panel. I think if you live in a warm climate (I live in Miami and it was a hot summer) it might have something to do with how easily it drips out.
