Best Value in a Compact SUV
We are looking to buy a compact SUV.
We have test driven the Q3 and Cx30 so far. The 40 Q3 progressive comes in at about 55 k CDN on the road. The cx30 GT comes in at about 46K CDN on the road. We could see and feel the 9k difference in the cars. The Q3 just felt more premium, better ride quality, more interior space. It also looks quite a bit sharper to our eyes. It looks like 2020 Q3's with normal mileage still go for about 40K, so depreciation loss will probably be about 15K in 3 years. It looks like 2020 Cx30 Gt's for for about 32K so depreciation loss is similar. It seems like a no brainer to go for the Q3. Are we missing anything in this analysis? Anything else in the market that comes to mind that offers a better value for a similar premium feel? I have a family member who has a mazda 3 who convinced us to try the cx30 saying it would offer the same premium feel and drive as the Q3, but to our eyes and butts, it did not! |

BMW X1? It shows it starts around 46 before taxes. Maybe pull your budget a bit higher for the CX5 GT which is still under 50k and it is a much better car. The new CRV is apparently also very nice. RAV4 is another good un

Your thread title says best value, but then your criteria includes a premium feel. Not always an easy combination.
For example, the Toyota RAV4 hybrid might work for you, but even the fanciest trim does not feel that premium (example, in past years there was never an option for a power passenger seat). However, the hybrid powertrain gives you nice snappy (and relatively quiet) acceleration off the line that makes it a great combo for around town driving. It also has higher resale value than most other small SUVs. During COVID there were folks who bought a RAV4, drove it for 18-24 months, and then sold it for almost the same as the purchase price. |

Yeah define value? Plus are you talking drive away figures that include taxes etc? I'd get a 2012 X1 in pristine shape and enjoy the glorious steering. 35i if you can find one.

by value, I mean the best possible experience for the money spent. It seems to me that the Q3 beats the cx30 in that regard as it will likely only cost slightly more for a better experience.
Looking on thoughts on what might top the Q3. |

Jesus H, that's like $65K CDN with taxes.
I dunno, unless you're doing at least 20K miles a year I cannot stomach new car prices. A 2012 X1 is cheap and drives like a regular car. Here, keep 30K in your pocket........ https://www.autotrader.ca/a/bmw/x1/t...%202N2&sprx=-1 300HP, tune to near 400 for peanuts........... https://www.autotrader.ca/a/bmw/x1/c...%202N2&sprx=-1 |

My vote is a x1
Back in 2018 I got my x1 for 42k OTD (Sticker was 49k) Traded it in with 75k mile and got 19k trade in last year for a X7; at times I wish still had it. Awesome car over all in that class. And is well equipped + BMW tech > then all others. Q3 when we was looking was a little too small; felt crammed in back. Test drive it and see how you like it |

X1 - costs more when similarly equipped and requires premium fuel, Q3 only requires 87 octane, she also didn’t like the interior relative to the Q3 - hates the let’s stick a screen here/iPad stuck here look like it was a design afterthought and prefers the more integrated screen in the Q3 Anything Merc, significantly more $ Mazda 3 or CX30 - doesn’t drive like the Audi CR-V - in her words ‘too big’ and doesn’t drive like the Q3. She regularly drives the CR-V as her mother has one. RAV4 - too big and bland to drive HR-V - she doesn’t mind it, but under powered and lacking a number of features What scares me with the Q3 is a good friend is a mechanic at Audi and in his words - ‘lease it and run before the warranty is up!’

Can't say I have followed Audi all that closely. Never been in any of their recent SUVs. However back when I did many years ago I did not care much for Audi's as most of them seemed like just overpriced VW's. Typically all the same drivetrain etc with maybe just slightly better materials. Maybe that has changed, haven't looked at either brand in a long time, but if she likes Audi maybe a VW might be similar for less $$.
Then again I also think my sisters Mazda SUV is pretty nice inside. |

what’s the point of a “compact SUV” anyways? Get a wagon or a sedan if you need 4 doors or just get a regular hatchback!
Seriously $50k for these ridiculous little raised boxes is something I will never get.

I don't want to throw this in, how bout a Hyundai Tucson/Kia Sportage, latter EX well equipped is about 44 on the road, and the PHEV is round 50k on the road, which is significant value.

I just cannot get past the prices new. You can buy a mildly used Stelvio in great shape for $40K all in. New prices are absolutely insane and there's good "covid miles" used cars out there.

This has always the case with the new vs used argument. Some people simply just want new cars, even when realizing they could get something nicer on the used market for similar prices.

when I had a Consumer Reports subscription I saw that the Audi Q3 did not rank high in the column where people would buy it again.
and when I had the previous generation BMW X1 as a loaner there was something about the seats which felt not up to the size and design I expected. I sat in a new Toyota Venza hybrid and the interior (controls) from the drivers seat felt wrongly sized for the vehicle and cheap. I use to have a 2017 HR-V and as a cuv for hauling and messing around in I thought it was rather good. |
