Another DIY Detail
I got the car yesterday YAY!! I will let you know my full thoughts in a week or so as we are nipping off for a holiday in the car so I will get a good few miles under my belt first. Thus far though I am very very happy!
I know this is not a detailing forum but you all seem to like a bit of car porn so thought you’d appreciate my efforts. Car was delivered unmolested (bar the dealer sticker..arrrghh); the dealer didnt even rinse her (emailed many times to be sure ), no contact wash with their sandpaper sponges. So I was optimistic the paint would be as BMW intended i.e. covered in orange peel I went to the tint shop this morning, went for 30% in the end they did a cracking job! (www.ultimatetinting.co.uk – Stephen seemed a good guy). I decided a more OEM look was better in the end and with Stephen’s opinion. So onto my work, here are all the products I used. Attachment 1012698 First step – I gave her two pre-washes with VP Citrus pre-wash. Love this stuff it is fabulous as I’ve already posted (see my thread Pre-wash trial). Next up came some AF Iron out. Watching the purple bleed out of your car is satisfying. There was less that I thought there would be though. Attachment 1012699 Attachment 1012700 Next a 2 bucket contact wash and several mits for different levels and a very light touch! I needed to use some tar remover on bits of the paintwork, probably glue or some other sticky gunk from its journey, who knows. I bag tested all panels, all were smooth as a babies bum so no need to clay which is a bonus!!! I inspected the paint in the shade with a bright sunlight bulb lamp. One minor patch of very light scratches on the boot, nothing deep or drastic and NO Swirls!!!! So no need to polish the whole car! another bonus. Will crack out my DAS-6 in a few months and sort the boot lid but the paint may be too soft now and I’d rather wait till it’s a bit harder and more forgiving. Onto the LSP. I had two different sealants in my kit box and a nice wax. It’s always hard to know which will be best when you do a new colour but from seeing others posts on here I decided to do a couple of coats of sealant. I had AG EGP and FK1000p sealants. Went with the FK1000p as it is quicker to work with in that you can quickly build layers, time was short. I do like EGP though if I have a few days to go at it. Use a damp applicator and put the fk on super thin, it’s just a bit easier to remove if you put it on thin and the damp pad helps that. Below are the results after the second coat of FK1000p. Gave the plastic honey comb and fog surrounds a quick wipe down with 10% IPA. Then dressed them with a single coat of GYEON Q2 Trim. I sealed the wheels (front and inside) with a coat of PPWSS, when I’ve got more time I will build a few layers up I think. Dressed the tyres with some AG tyre spray and she’s looking mighty fine. I am just in love with EBII !!! I’ve got to see it in several different lights today whilst working on the car, it is just such a wonderful colour, soooooo pleased I switched my order from Sapphire black. I then cleaned the windows and wiped them down carefully with 99.9% IPA, then sealed them with Gtechniq G1 system (3 coats – front screen) and G5 (one coat all external glass). I also did the tail pipes with some fk1000p. I’ve seen a few of you have swapped the tips for darker ones but I’m going to leave mine chrome I think. On the interior I will treat the leather at some point but it will be fine for now. Plus the inside will be covered in kid crap by the end of the holiday. It’s amazing that its easier to keep the outside clean than it is the inside when you have kids, there will be hand prints, snot, drool, foot prints everything all over it in a matter of hours (@Saby would have a heart attack, see ‘Driving a diesel hard.’ – this is still making me laugh!) And here is the finished article! A wee bit of work but worth it, I also get to do it all again in a few months so looking forward to that . All my wandering eyes for other colours have gone, EBII all the way! Thanks for reading. Attachment 1012723 Attachment 1012724 Attachment 1012725 Attachment 1012726 Attachment 1012727

Superb job. It's very satisfying to stand back and look at the result of your efforts. Did you get the valet pro citrus prewash locally or mail order?

No I was too busy trying to get done before the sun set, only just made it. These pics are still whilst I had stuff to do like the q2 trim.

That looks fantastic! It's great to see such results from another DIY fella.
I just love the sky reflected in the bonnet. It makes it look extra blue! Great work and enjoy your holiday. I hope you can find some decent roads to play with your lovely 6 cylinder on.

Looks fantastic! Sounds like you're a proper pro!
What's the purpose of the Iron out stuff? I use tar remover and clay every so often but that's not something I've heard of before. When I had mine detailed a month back I was asking the detailer about BMW paint compared to others and he was saying that orange peel is the main issue but actually pretty much all the manufacturers had that issue. Porsche were pretty good at avoiding the orange peel, but were actually on the soft side compared to BMW. Apparently most of the new Audis he has seen recently have been softer than before, but the BMW paint is still quite hard. He was doing my car at 3 months old, so am sure you'll be fine to polish that boot as per your plan.

Iron x basically takes iron contaminants off the car, brake dust for York own car, other cars, with mine I park near a railway line and it removes railway dust ( iron sht loads of it lol)
Nothing much should come off a new car however it's worth trying it out. |

Iron removers are great for wheels. They really dissolve brake deposits well. I did my new car with DoDo Juice Ferrous Dueller and got nothing off the paintwork and glass. I also did my better half's 6 year old car and got only very little effect on the paint and glass. But the wheels bled purple iron deposits and came up the best I've ever managed.
As above, the paint cleansing effect is of greater use for a car parked near railways or any other source if iron dust. For my rural setting it's really just a wheel thing.

Pretty much so, however since people started using IronX then everyone expects purple run off, so how much is marketing pandering and how much is real run off? Pass.

Just finished doing the wife's new car (18 miles on the clock). For those who are interested the car was covered in the iron contamination in these pics, this was all over the car. There was loads more purple from the iron out than on my f30 but it just shows you how much there can be on the paint, it would be invisible on darker colours. This car was dealer prepped so they don't get it out! It's definitely worth iron decontaminating a new car.
