Are they the same price? I learned earlier that AP is $299 to join and $99/year to renew. How much is Netflix?

All the best.

The one worth getting is $8.99/month.

Except you get a whole lot of other stuff with Prime ($99/year) than you do with Netflix ($107.88).

I have both. Netflix has better content but Amazon is at least putting some effort in. Their shipping and Prime discounts are the main reason I have Prime.

You aren't paying $99/year on AP just to watch TV. You also get free music streaming.

...
Because I truly don't know...Are you saying one gets that much more for 99¢? Or did ASAP just round down? I don't care about the money; I'm just wondering if 99¢ actually buys that much more.

($8.99 looks like $9 to me, not $8, but that's another matter. )

Red:
At home in my bedroom, that's probably fine. I record plenty of shows in SD just to conserve space on the DVR...doesn't bother me a bit. I'm sure I could get by with SD on the TV in my bedroom for the 100 or fewer days a year I'm actually in my house.

In two weeks, I'll be mostly an "empty nester." So what my kids want no longer matters. You'd be surprised at how easy to please I am re: stuff like routine television/movie watching. I was quite satisfied with the old SD CRT tube televisions. I like my updated televisions, mostly for their leaner profiles that allow me to have a larger picture without also requiring a a piece of furniture to hold the television, but if I'm honest with myself, but for the freed up floor space, I don' think they did more than fixed something that wasn't broken.

Make no mistake, however, if I didn't have kids who were griping to no end about the old televisions, I'd probably still be using them. Everyone with kids knows they are expensive. Other than equestrian sports, it's stuff like that that makes them expensive. It's no wonder they think a new car is "cheap."

How is that different from the music on my Direct TV or the music from my iPod? Isn't that streaming music? It's music and it's coming out of the speakers, and I can hear it over the speakers in every room in the house if I want to, and there are no commercials or DJs talking.

I can't imagine people are going to actually subscribe to Prime just for this.

Are they going to be releasing episodes every week or are they going to release a seasons worth of episodes like Netflix does with their content?

What about countries outside U.S.?

I'm betting the large majority of viewers download episodes/or watch them on YouTube/Vimeo or streaming.

What's going to happen to TopGear UK (proper)?

You get to pick which songs you want to listen to and create various playlists. Much like iTunes or Spotify except it's free...well it's not free since it's a small portion of that $99/year fee. Obviously there's no commercials or DJ's since you paid for it. It also comes with free movie and TV streaming, again if you have a smart TV or any other device that allows you to run apps on your TV then you can watch it all there.

But hey if you're fine being a Luddite then all the best. Surprised you even know how to use an internet forum! (joking)

I think other Amazon specific TV shows release all episodes at the same time so I'd imagine this show will be no different.

Top Gear UK is being recast with a set of new hosts. So far Chris Evans (not the guy who plays Captain America, he's some UK DJ or some crap like that) has been the only confirmed new host.

Now I don't think people will pay $99 just to watch a single TV show (that'd be pretty stupid) but I think it'll convince a lot of people to stop asking their friends with Prime accounts to order shit for them to get the 2 day free shipping and just get an account themselves.

Netflix= $8/month

Amazon Prime= $99/year

There is no initiation fee for Amazon. If you get Amazon solely for it's media content then you will be disappointed, but if you get it for the items you want to buy then the whole package is easily worth it. After a few items have shipped on Prime the membership has already paid for itself. You end up making most of your purchases on Amazon once you see how many things are on the site.

You can't argue with the price of Netflix. Almost no reason to not get it.

Exactly. I have a US Amazon Prime account, and I can't even watch any of the content (it is blocked in Canada, even with a US VPN) Just for fast/cheap shipping of items bought in the US.

Yeah I find it pretty dumbfounding that people don't see the value proposition with an Amazon Prime account. I order virtually everything from AP especially during the holidays.

At $8.25/month, pretty much ordering one item a month and having it shipped via two day shipping pays for itself and then some.

Need new ink cartridges for your printer? Amazon.
Need a new large pack of paper towels? Amazon.
I'm half asian so I make a lot of asian food where I can't find the ingredients in my local store. The nearest oriental market is about 30 min away (assuming there's no traffic...which there will be) but Amazon has it.
Need AA batteries or something? Amazon may as well be fucking giving those away.

I've gotten two day shipping packages on SUNDAYS too. I couldn't really see myself without a Prime account, I rely on it 100% on shopping and nothing else. Once this new Top Gear show comes on though, I'll use it for that too, just icing on the cake for me.

Didn't see this posted yet but:

http://www.autoblog.com/2015/07/31/a...-stars-report/

Amazon will pay $250mm over three years to produce 36 episodes...that's almost $7mm PER episode.

Even if you consider that that $250mm includes payroll for the hosts and the staff, that's still a lot of money.

Seems that Amazon Prime Video is only offered in a handful of countries. It will force those of us in other locations to do as we were doing before.....find a way to illegally download or watch the episodes.

Yes, but they're the biggest names in automotive entertainment (if that's even an accurate portrayal of the genre). Despite what people are saying about the subscription cost, there will be people trying out the 30-day trial period of Amazon Prime, and will inevitably stick around.

I think it's a huge win for Amazon. I'm curious to see what Netflix's losing offer to them was, since there's NO way the company didn't try to snatch them up.

The ui sucks for prime. Yes netflix does use the amazon cloud, but its a way better user experience to use netflix. I have both for a long time, prime is for buying stuff and netflix for streaming.
