First World Problem: PAM 560 vs 112

Okay so my birthday is around the corner and my wife has agreed to "buy" me my first Panerai...now my conundrum...the 560 or the 112? I'm still in the early stages of research/deciding but I love the way both look and I'm just trying to garner some advice on what things I should be taking into consideration between the two. This will be my first premium watch for myself and I just don't know what I don't know. Any thoughts would be appreciated

Look at in person and see which crystal you like better. Are you into movements?
Will you wear the watch often or leave in drawer for days at a time?

What are your expectations re: buying either Pam or other pricey watch? Those expectations will drive what, if anything and IMO there likely isn't anything, you need to consider beyond pricing and beyond which one appeals most to you aesthetically, and in terms of fit and comfort.

The reason I think there isn't anything is because neither is a Pre-V model, so neither has been around long enough for the secondary collectors' market to settle on a clear preference between them. The 560 is but a new flavor of 112. Whereas the 112 used an assembly line produced ETA-based movement the 560 uses an assembly line produced in-house movement. The P5000 movements themselves aren't so radically improved over the ETA/Unitas 6497 in the 112, heck they aren't improved at all other than having a huge power reserve, that there's much objective reason to choose the 560 over the 112.

The in-houseness isn't relevant either. In the past, and even now for certain watches, that it is in-house made (case and movement) had some relevance because it depicted an artisan's personal skills and his/her trademark style. These days, consolidation in the watch industry, along with the long established quality and former abundance of ETA movements, has made in-house production of entry level high end watches a business exigency rather than an reflection of a craftsman's skills and artistry; makers just don't have much of a marketing story to tout if they have ETA-inside, even though ETA-inside means the thing will almost without exception work without drama for decades.

All the best.

I believe one had a convex crystal and one has a flat crystal / I could be wrong

BTW...are you certain your watch usage habits will support your wearing a manual watch rather than an automatic? For me, if a watch is to be a daily wearer, it must be an automatic. For folks who switch out their watches every couple days or more frequently, a manual is fine, and it would be for me too. Yet other folks don't mind winding their watch every X-many days.

Truly, if I wore a watch every day and only had to wind it every 7 to 8 days, I'd forget to wind it even more than I forgot to wind the Reverso Duo I tried to adopt as my daily wearer. LOL Forgetting to wind the Reverso is why I switched back to my Constellation as my daily wearer; I just realized that my daily wearer must fit into my habits because, in spite of how much I think I would do so, the evidence has shown me that I'm not willing to alter them. LOL

All the best.

This for all the food for thought. It will be a daily watch, I think it's really going to come down to seeing them in person and trying them out. I'll report back with my decision...and share some pics of course.

I know this sounds crazy, but in all likelihood, it was going to come down to that even before you posed your inquiry.

BTW, one thing I didn't mention before: it takes a long time to fully wind an 8 day power reserve. It takes just a few seconds to wind an automatic enough that work effectively from that point on.

All the best.

i have a 111 and I love it, i wear it everyday, it's subtle and not too flashy.. Only really get compliments if i'm infront of a real watch person. Its also VERY comfortable..

I just bought a 609 on Friday. The 8 day power reserve is pretty neat. Light and comfortable watch.
