Don't use spacers if you're going to track the car... it's not worth it!

No no.. go back and read my original question.. I will not use spacers and do not want any rubbing... So I guess the answer is the 17X8.5 as long as they clear the brakes..

SO now that we cleared that.. what size tire? I probably want to stick with 245' as 255' seems to be too close for comfort... Which is better 245-45 or 245-40?

245-45 are cheaper and more available. Currently no one has Direzza Z1 SS in 245/40, or 255/40, Tire Rack has 245/45 though. RE01R are available in 245/40 but they are $60 more expensive than 245/45...well currently on special at tTR for $30 more. You'd be fine with 245/40 (you'd be surprised what I can wring out of 245/45 rubber ) However with 17x8.5 you may be better off with 255/40 (although those are even more expensive). Are you lowered? If not you shouldn't have any problems (bar maybe parking lot maneuvers) with 255 and you'd gain the wider contact patch. Are you new to AutoX/HPDE?

Not lowered, and yes I am a novice with 2 track days and 1 AUto cross under my belt..
Planning to do a lot more events in the near future though.. Don't think the extra contact patch of the 255's will make that much of a difference at my skill level.. I just do not want any rubbing at all for peace of mind |

Stay away from R comps or cup tires then. I used Bridgestone Potenza RE01R through my early learning process (245/45/ZR17) and am trying out Dunlop Direzza Z1 Star Specs now (same fitment). The Z1 SS are louder but noticeably more responsive. I haven't gotten to test their thermal capacities yet but either tire would work well for you. The Kuhmo Ecsta MX is a classic, as well as the Falken Azenis. I would suggest the RE01R though as they squeal like a pig anytime they are the least bit unhappy. The 245/45 work perfectly fine on 17x8.5 just some people may be worried about sidewall flex. With the RE01R or Z1 SS though the sidewall is so stiff it becomes a non-issue.

Thank you, so you really think that 245-45 is a better fit than 245-40 or are you saying to go with that size bacause it's cheaper.. Would I be better off with the tires that you recommended in the 245-40 size?

What I'm saying is that you will probably not notice 245/45 to 245/40 difference in the two tires I'm speaking of. Those two tires have ridiculously stiff sidewalls so going to 245/40 would just cost more. Someone else correct me if I'm wrong please, but save your money get a pair of Z1 SS or RE01R (I think the Z1 SS are actually cheaper, but whatever take your pick) and go to town. After 1 autocross and 2 track days the most important thing is getting smooth and furthering your learning of the line and you can do that on any fitment of the tires that I mentioned, and the 245/45 are the cheapest.

take a look at the spec sheet for the RE01R looks like 245/40/17 has higher treadwear rating (less sticky?) and lower max load (less stiff sidewall?) than the 245/45/17 size Not sure if these will be noticeable or not, but seems like there could be a difference My usual approach in this situation is stalk cars at DEs that have the mods I am thinking about, get a ride and then copy the mods if you like it |

you shave 1 lbs per corner with the 245/40! A whole 2 lbs per corner with the Z1 SS 245/40! Seriously any of those will be fine, save your money, get the cheapest and shred some rubber You're not shaving hundreths here, you're shaving seconds or tenths at best.

Does this matter at all? Since I am running stock suspension, shouldn't I try to stay as close as possible to the stock 17'' 17x8 ET34 225/45 R17 circumference?
The 245-40/17 looks like this: Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference 225/45-17 4.0in 12.5in 25.0in 78.5in 808 0.0% 245/40-17 3.9in 12.4in 24.7in 77.6in 816 -1.0% The 245-45/17 looks like this: Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference 225/45-17 4.0in 12.5in 25.0in 78.5in 808 0.0% 245/45-17 4.3in 12.8in 25.7in 80.7in 785 2.8% The 255-40/17 looks like this: Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference 225/45-17 4.0in 12.5in 25.0in 78.5in 808 0.0% 255/40-17 4.0in 12.5in 25.0in 78.6in 806 0.2% So according to this, the 255-40 is the closest to the stock 17" followed by the 245-40 and the 245-45 that you are recommending is the most off !! Does that make a difference? |

Thank you again so much, I just checked the pricing on Tirerack.. The difference is really not much for the Dunlops Z1 SS $152 for the 245-40 vs $133 for the 245-45
so $76 more for all 4 tires.. looks like I am going to go with the 245-40 since you say they are the best choice... Thanks again, this was been very helpful |
