This is interesting, thanks for posting up. My son contemplated driving for Uber when he was unemployed recently. I disliked the idea, mostly because he drives a Volvo S60R and I was concerned that the overhead would eat him alive. But also I worried a bit about his safety.

So to my question: even with your Bourne-ish skillz, do you have concerns about your safety? If so, what steps do you take in that regard?

A major red flag is when a driver is at the pickup location but the rider is nowhere to be found. This happened to me once about 4-5 weeks ago. After waiting a few minutes I text the passenger and was told that he/she was a mile away. I cancelled the ride and moved on. I sensed a set up/car jack or whatever. At night, I am constantly checking my side mirrors and my doors are locked when waiting for a passenger. If I’m waiting right in front of a bar/club with lots of people around, I’m somewhat more relaxed. I have imaged scenarios on what I could do proactively to avoid tough situations but common sense would be to NEVER LEAVE THE CAR. The Lyft driver who was shot in the back four times left his car and ran. That is something I would never do. Slam on the gas peddle and burn rubber is what I would have done.

What if you have to pick up (or drop off) someone in a really, really bad area?

I have let pings pass by (ie not accepting) if I see its in a shady area. When dropping off at a shady area, Bourne mode to the max.

Think about it though, say I have a concealed weapon for self defense and the perp will be in the hospital for a gunshot wound. Uber/Lyft will eventually find out.

Hence concealed. No one knows. Would ya rather die or maybe get fired from a job that is easily replaced? No one is going to tell me I cannot protect myself. I've had jobs where it was in the company policy no weapons on premises. I carried daily & no one ever knew.

So given this is your new gig for the time being are you running a dash / inside camera?

Give possible insurance claims and safety concerns might be a good idea and cheap insurance.

While I don't drive for a living I put one in my daily/winter driver about 4 months ago just for peace of mind to take the he said she said out of the equation in case of an accident.

Experiencing the relative cheap price, WiFi video replay, and parking mode, going to probably put cameras in my other cars.

For about $150 maybe something you might want to consider.

How do you decide whether to take a Uber or Lyft call if both come in at about the same time?

Neither cares that you drive for the other?

My insurance specifically excludes coverage if I were to do such driving. How do you address that?

This was going to be my next question.

I worked for an insurance company a couple years ago as an adjuster, and I remember we denied coverage for some of our claims because they were Uber/Lyft drivers. It was considered as using the vehicle as a taxi service per the policy, which required a different type of insurance.

A pain in the ass if you rear-end someone and are liable, a real nightmare if there are injuries and you get sued.

How is the treatment different between Lyft and Uber? I've been told by several drivers that Lyft treats their drivers better and you get paid a bit more. Because of that feedback, I look to Lyft before Uber.

Rinky dink in the fact that they didn't allow it or didn't find out he was carrying?

I've worked previously for a big insurance company as well as a state government agency. Both had strict no weapons policies, and if found with one you would be terminated immediately.

What sort of items have been left in your car? Did you keep them or return them? Don't lie, we wont judge.

As to the auto insurance questions, my insurance provider, USAA, always ask me if I use the vehicle for Uber/Lyft or any other taxi service. They offer coverage if so. My friend does it and he said his rates increased a whopping $5 per month (USAA).
