Others have pretty much covered all the bases, but I have an extra which while not a prerequisite, is a dead giveaway that the driver loves cars...

Tire polish.

Anybody who goes out of their way to hand wash and apply tire polish definitely loves their car. During the summer months, you'd be hard-pressed to find my car without it.

Went shopping with the wife Sunday , bought her some new underwear and two night gowns for valentines day, no surprises with clothes not good at picking styles or sizes. Just bought some John Legend concert tickets for her for a surprise gift on valentines day. Called my wife told her I got her a surprise gift she is really gonna like, FIRST words out of her mouth "you bought me more shit for my car!"
Do I qualify?

Any true car enthusiast welcomes the chance to let people, who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience them, drive their cars.

Lol.

Whenever it rains in the non-winter months it ruins my mood cause it makes the car dirty and washes the tire polish off. I'm working on changing my mindset a bit...

This. Someone here on campus occasionally drives their early 80's Chevrolet Caprice to work. The thing looks brand new I find myself walking around it when it's here

I beg to differ. Do you like cruising with dirty wheels? Now granted in NY when I lived with road salt a few months of the year, I couldn't clean my wheels daily, however, down here in FL, especially now during the dry season, my wheels stay clean

I struggle to find passion for SmartCars and the Pontiac Aztek. I guess the Aztek tent is pretty cool. Maybe I'm just not cut out to be an enthusiast...

When i got to the SmartCar and Aztek portion of the first sentence i immediately thought of the Aztek Tent as it's only redeeming quality. Then read your next sentence and LOLed. Even as a tent it's pretty stupid because you aren't going to be able to drive it off road very far. But then when it breaks down, it's going to come in handy.

I'm sure you'd agree that the SmartCar has merit in a large city, no? That's about the best i can come up with. They aren't even that good at MPGs. The only thing there really good at is being cheap and small.

But i think you both make good points. Appreciate a Civi which has been tastefully modded while some cars have few to no good attributes. Though the Reliant Robin has made for good TV, it's an automotive abomination.

I'd say there's still a common element among car enthusiasts regardless brand, age or money.

Along these lines ^^^, a car is not a toaster nor tool nor status symbol, its something you enjoy, its about driving not commuting. there's tons of douches with great cars but they are not all car guys most are just showing off. I always say if you don't look back at your car after you park it and smile a bit, now and then, you're not a car guy or you bought the wrong car.

That car was a serious love/hate relationship. When it was running right, it was the best car I've ever owned. But damn, that thing would break down every other month like clockwork. It was always something. Still, I loved driving it.

I can see why. God, I love those e38 Sports.

Enthusiasts want to share stories of turmoil in the garage filled with blood, sweat, and tears. They appreciate every aspect that goes into their hobby, from engineering the flow of body lines to suspension, and to little Jimmy building his first Fiero.

Albeit, lets not confuse enthusiast to personality traits. Many enthusiasts with respectable cars can also be the biggest twats.
