I guess it was a combination of not quite the right package as Max said, he has had a new PU since Baku and the added Sprint race may have contributed to the lagging behind Leclerc at race time in some way.

I hear that the Merc got a very strong update package , in terms of aero and more ponies .

Yeah I know . Last year MAX was questioned about that and he said : I don't care how it looks like , I just put a hat on because I have to .

But I really care about my helmet because I have to race with it ..

I was looking up at that also somewhere before, Merc like Ferrari with an aggressive map in the high heat may be their undoing, keeping in mind their off's and damage at Spielberg such a fix for Merc would be too quick in the space of just two weeks and RB with the more reliable PU may leapfrog them when it matters and I envisage Checo will be very quick here with him having had new PU components at Baku also.

Just read the latest and it was a set up mistake by RB which made the rear tires overheat in the main race at Spielberg..the car being set up premium for the Sprint.
Marko is confident that it won't be repeated at Ricard and it was puzzling at first as Ferrari were not particularly fast with Max quizzical why his car was like that in the end giving Chas an easy victory.
Checo has got to make sure he is ahead of the Mercs to avoid the threat of being punted off by them with the paltry penalty for doing that.

Waiting for the list from FIA just before practice to see who actually has got new parts, Leclerc has a new floor it is known while Sainz makes do with the previous one as the cost budget bites and of course he is almost certain to start at the back with a new PU the same spec as the one which failed after two races; I can't see one of the two worn ones used previously to the one that blew being used by him and hopefully they have got all their PU's back from Maranello checked over to provide some great action for the race weekend.

While waiting for Ferrari's decision I'm sure that Alonso is reading my comments on here.
He says that modern F1 fans, not including the old guard mainstay of F1, know little about f1 and have a sort of football fan mentality in only thinking that the ones in front are at best and the others don't matter lacking the insight into why the ones at the back are there because their R&D is not on par with the leaders.
This was mostly apparent at Silverstone.

I've been loitering here a bit and yes quick straight out of the traps for Max and Checo still getting used to that oversteer destroying his softs with a spin but thankfully large run off areas here with no gravel.
Chas was having a turbo stall with his 1.75 but eyes & ears are all on whats happening with Sainz's power unit,he has a new ECU at the moment on one of his used PU's?

He had to take a grid penalty , so I think Sainz's PU is a new one .

So far it's a third CE, control electronics according to F1 which has a 10 grid place drop but he could well have more with more new parts.

Front wing adjust for Max and he seems happier with that as he helps Checo out with a tow.

Max has only to think about Lec as Sainz is going down the grid however quick he is with his new parts and the fuse may already be burning on the Lec's race PU..

Russell has said he's seen high deg on Lec's medium tires after just 11 laps he did on them so that will be news to Max's team strats with the race being 53 laps.

Even Max knows his fans are douchebags:

He pleaded, “I am a PSV fan. But when I watch a great football match, I enjoy it, whether my team wins or loses. It would be nice if fan behaviour in our sport was the same. And that, despite all the rivalry, opponents are also treated with respect.”

Bit of class from VER. Maybe it'll filter down
