Parking camera doesnt switch to front when shifting
Ok so this drives me crazy. When I put it in reverse the rear camera comes on which makes sense, but then when I put it into drive it stays on the rear camera! If Im going forward, I need to see the front! Any way to fix this?

Same thing. But what I mean is I want it to shift to the front camera when I shift from R to D. When parallel parking it's so annoying having to reach out and select each individual camera. Most other modern vehicles do this where it switches from rear cam to front cam when you gear shift automatically

I notice this is a flaw in every German car I have driven / owned where there is a delay after switching from reverse to drive. However, I don't have this problem with my 6MT car!

BMWs don’t automatically engage the front cameras until the PDC detects an obstacle.

Thats the problem. It doesnt even switch when im pulling forward towards an obstacle. The sensors go off but the camera is still stupidly showing me the rear end. makes parallel parking harder than it should be

In other words, it does exactly what it should. And the (front) camera turn off when I drive forward 50m or something (or speed is over 50km from memory) |

Mine used to do this, but after a software update it stopped doing so. I wonder if it was a weird safety recall issue. This was years ago though (I’m on Idrive 7, bought G20 back in April 2019, and it did it when i first bought it).

Have you checked the box "Automatic PDC activation" in menu ?
We have several models of bimmer in the house from 2019 to 2202 (G01, G02, G82) and all have the same behavior for front /rear cameras when doing the parking. And when in traffic, if it goes really slow then the front camera would also turn on (the car thinks you are finding a parking space !) |

As Edi noted the camera needs to be on “auto” for it to automatically flip between rear and front (as well as other views). That will also enable steering adaptive support for the camera as well.
My understanding is the default was Auto until the US NHTSA forced BMW to lock it to the rear camera based on US regulations. |

Wow. I feel like a complete idiot. How did I not see the auto button?! I hit it and voila it works. It actually does kick to front camera automatically regardless of an obstacle or not. It just always goes to front or rear depending on shifter even if im not around any obstacles at all. Amazing!

Funny enough, it still defaults AWAY from this setting. So when I got into my car today to leave for work, it went back to not auto. So I guess you have to reach up and hit the Auto button every time you park to make it do this? Thats so odd

Anyway, as others mentioned, the auto mode is also needs to be on so it switched cameras correctly. And not just front and rear cameras, depending on how close the obstacle to the car, the side camera also gets focus and turned on that side as well. AND : this Auto mode is saved in the car, at least in my region. But I believe it is NOT in US for some reasons and may need to have coded to keep it saved. |
