Something Everyone Interested in Watches Should Watch

I just discovered this dude recently. I'd never heard of him, but listening to him, I feel him a kindred spirit. I don't agree with all of his specific watch opinions, but I do agree 100% with the perspective and approach he has about watches and watch collecting.

The thing I like best about this guy is that the vast majority of what he says doesn't take a watch expert to know. Surprisingly, however, the vast majority of so-called watch enthusiasts don't get it, some even after having spent a lot of time and money on multiple watches.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...&v=MiTG7ZlTv2E

Note it's not a short video, but there's nothing really to see of any note either; the still imagery is only loosely coordinated with the dialogue and there is no motion in the whole thing. Just start it up on one browser tab and listen while you do your thing on another.

^ Yes he is!

Archie has the right perspective about watches, probably about must "stuff." Sometimes though I'm not sure that all his viewers do. <wink>

this guy is straight out crazy. Entertaining no doubt, but not much to say on his comments. The only thing we probably have in common is our age as this guy is far out there. Who the hell walks around with watches trying to pickup women!!!

Im just not into skinny dress watches and while I have all respects for the big three, they dont move me at all from a daily watch wear point of view. The few models that Ive liked in the past are not watches Id feel comfortable wearing anymore as my styles have changed as well as my mindset. I always thought i wanted a VC growing up, but had looked at models in the $30K range. I just dont have the passion for them anymore, and would spend that amount towards two nice watches from a certain brand that Ive grown to love.

funny stuff though

Comments:
Yes, like the Watch Snob, he's good for entertainment value, but unlike the Watch Snob, he presents the entertaining "snobby stuff" yet it's said with something sensible so one can tell that his primary intent is parody and entertainment, rather than that actually being the right way to perceive watches. For example, his reasons for not desiring an ALS or F. Muller watch illustrates the place of subjectivity in the hobby of watch collecting.

The salient points that he made or that one should glean from his comments, IMO, were:
  • His preferences are his opinion, but not right or wrong.
  • One's collection must reflect one's own values and personality.
  • Commercial popularity doesn't make a watch not be a great thing and not worth having.
  • It's not about money. It's about what "does it" for you, regardless of the price.
  • Facetiousness must be clear to the audience.
  • Graciousness is how to be (final comment to the young lady who adored his "trinity" watch)
Lost Passion:
Yes, that happens. I too have been into watches, over watches, and back and forth for some 40 years. It's not a big deal...there's a time and place for everything...live is about the journey, the ebb and flow...

All the best.

good points on subjectivity, I certainly feel the same with my passions for those brands that I desire. I like the history of a brand as well, though my views would not follow along with his, but they are in the same vein in that to me, my appreciation is about the history as much as anything else, though certainly the history and brands I enjoy are perhaps not as apparent as others just for the fact that most probably dont know the connection.

My desire for a VC was based purely on historical references, but at the end of the day, its not my style at this point so no need to concern about what to do to acquire one. I've found my perfect fit thankfully and for the forseeable future, I have my eyes on a few additonal pieces to slowly add to the collection as time moves forward.

I understand. It breaks my heart to hear, but I get it too. I wish I could afford to buy several VCs, or more precisely:
Alas, it's just not going to happen in the foreseeable future.

All the best.

They do have some fine watches, I like the American from the historiques, but I'm really intrigued with the Skelton watches, Patrimony has some nice styles both current and past models, though I believe you may not be a fan of them from what I recall ...the art watches are beautiful as well...

^ Yep, very few skeletons do it for me, but the one or two that do are just flawless: they look flawless and they are flawlessly expensive. LOL <winks then cries>

I respect the watches; I just don't care usually for the look.

All the best.

it's not rocket science to arrive at his conclusion about watches, but his style is obnoxious and bigoted

If smart people are parodying it, that's a sure sign that some less smart people are believing it.”

??? The guy is a comedian. How can one not see the intent of his video is mostly to entertain?

Has our society reached the point were satire is just no longer understood as a literary form/device? Do people no longer read Lewis Carroll, Voltaire, Erasmus, Jonathan Swift, or watch/read Matt Stone and Trey Parker's works?

All the best.

With Matt Stone and Trey Parker being the modern day geniuses / artists in that list, I believe many people today don't understand their work. Whenever I am getting to know new people, I'll usually reference South Park to get their take on the show. If someone can't appreciate South Park for what it is, I begin to question their sense of humor and sometimes their intelligence as well.
