Need help and thoughts on my e60 bmw

I recently just got a bmw e60 and it runs perfect besides when I accelerate hard for the first couple times it sounds like my engine misfires and I have to turn it off and then back on again to make it run like normal but when the engine is heated up their is no misfires at all and I’m so confused because I don’t know what’s wrong with it

No misfires when warmed up so does that mean you’re driving the car hard/high rpm to cause misfires while the engine is cold and/or not fully warmed up? If the answer is “yes” then the problem is you by not allowing the engine to reach its operating temperature before you start beating on it.

Any chance any of this started after you modded the car?

It only started doing this after I took it to an auto shop nearby my house to change my fuel pump. And if I need to let the engine warm up, then how long should I wait or how would I know when it’s fully at operating temperatures?

Does the e60 have an oil temp gauge? At a minimum, keep engine rpm’s at or below 3k rpm and wait until the oil temp is at its normal operating temp (e.g., on my e92 M3, it’s when the oil temp reaches 210 F; M3 also has a variable redline that increases with increasing engine/oil temp) but I still wait at least another 5-15 min, depending on ambient temp, before I exceed 3k rpm. I do this to make sure the DCT and other components also are up to temp. Engine wear is the greatest when the engine is cold.

Thank you so much I really appreciate it and I’m going to make sure my engine is warm before I get anywheres above 3k rpm and I’m new to this car because I had an Acura tl so it could drive right away but this car has so much more power and I need to make sure I take better care of it. I’m just trying to figure it all out but thank you so much

Not to be a d*** about it, but the "rule" about keeping revs low until the oil is up to temperature applies to all ICE vehicles. In other words, it applies to the Acura you had, too.

Congrats on your new ride and welcome to the club

+1 on this. No, the non-M e60 does not have a temp gauge.

Even if the OP doesn't let the engine warm up before beating on it, it still shouldn't misfire etc.

OP, get yourself a BMW specific code reader (protool, INPA, ista, etc). It'll save you money in the long run.

Is their also any I specific code reader that you recommend that’s cheap and easy to use?

I used INPA when I had my E60, I'd recommend either that or Carly. Carly is more readily available and easier to get up and running with. INPA is/was BMWs factory software that they used back in the E-chassis days. I like using it, but it can be challenging to get setup correctly.

Thank you I appreciate it and the reason it was misfiring only when I accelerated was because my engine temp wasnt high and I just drive it and let it sit for a while and not let it get past 3k till it was warm and it was perfectly fine after!

No worries. It's how we've all learned along the way

P.S. Not helped by BMW—and other manufacturers—not including or even offering an oil temp gauge, -128ownerwithoutANYtempgauges

Cheapest is INPA/ista - free software, just need laptop and a decent kdcan cable. But most difficult to install and use.

I'd recommend protool - costs some and you need android device and a decent cable. But very easy to use, good support, etc.

Just a friendly tip: BMWs are great cars, and you can drive them hard, but if you abuse them they will abuse you back tenfold if you catch my drift. Enjoy the car, try 5series.net as well as it's a little more active than this forum.

I’m also learning the tenfold the hard way I’m definitely gonna drive it a lot smoother 😂
