Nikon D3000 vs. Canon EOS Rebel XS

I'm looking to dabble in photography and upgrade from my point and shoot. Wanting to take pictures of family, friends, misc scenery, cars, etc...

I'm looking at entry level cameras...

Nikon D3000 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16830113222

or

Canon EOS Rebel XS - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16830120278

Thoughts or suggestions? I was leaning towards the Nikon D3000.

I just got the Rebel XS as a gift, I did a little research and the consensus seems to be that both camera performs about the same, the D3000 has a larger LCD. The main issue is brand loyalty, and the fact that the D3000 doesn't have the auto-focus motor in the camera body, and the XS does. Which means you can get 3rd party lens (cheaper) for the XS and still have AF function whereas for the D3000, if you want AF, you have to get the Nikon lenses because the motor is on the lens.

I don't have brand loyalty and I don't have any current lens, lol. Anyone else?

It's all just personal preference really. When I first started out a few years back I went through the same thing. I researched and researched both brands (canon and nikon) and read all the comparisons. It basically boiled down to these:

1. go try them both out at the store and see which one feels more natural in your hands.
2. try out the menus/features and see which one is more intuitive
3. check out the accessories/lenses that they offer and see which brand offers more
4. if you're still undecided after that then just flip a coin and go with it

I asked other people I know about which brand to get and most of them said Nikon. Why? Because that's what they shoot with. I decided to go against the grain and went with Canon.

Do any of your friends use Nikon or Canon DSLR's?

If most of your friends use Nikon, you could always borrow some lens from them

I may just thrown in the towel and get the Canon T2i, its what I really wanted from the start. My cousin just got it with a bigger lens also (the 55-200 maybe?) I'm still looking though... lol
