Don't read too much into the unofficial rendering.

As for who this car is for, BMW doesn't have anything that competes with the Evoque or even the Kia Soul. I would have assumed the X2 would have been just that, but maybe BMW is taking that car in a slightly different direction.

Yes you were wrong. We are still the number one Premium manufacturer.
It is not just BMW. Porsche,Audi and Mercedes are rapidly expanding their model ranges. To lay this at BMWs door only as if they are the sole destroyers of their soul is not fairly accurate.
That's all ok so long as you continue to offer products for the niche market.

That said, the renders from Scott look very much, in the back anyway, like the GLA. I happen to like the GLA, but BMW and Merc looking two similar with these cross overs lately, with MB making the gle or whatever it's called way too similar looking to the X6.

What is this? Slowly annoying me... Why can't BMW be a truly devout sport/luxuxry brand, like they once used to be? The perfect line up would really, only exist of a 3 series, 5 series, 7 series, X5 and X3 and a supercar, like audis R8. The 4 series now would remain the 3 series coupe, and the 6 series, would turn to a 5 series coupe. Simple nomenclature, small amount of cars which dominate every segment as BMW can concentrate on perfecting them. And where's the problem with that? Wheres the problem with staying a proper company? Like Porsche?

This car is Norbert Reithofer driving one more nail in the coffin before he exits stage right.

I plan on buying a CPO 128i this year, after that I really think I'm done with BMW. They simply do not produce any new cars that I'm even remotely interested in.

I'd go for an i3, but the all-electric range isn't good enough, it's freaking hideous (should have made it look more Veloster-ish), and it's too expensive.

Maybe the incoming CEO will take the company a bit more 'back to its roots' so to speak. Time will tell I suppose.

Would love to see BMW do an Audi Allroad type car... When I first saw the pics before reading post, that's what I was thinking it was...

BMW will only take action when people start deserting the brand. Another horrible niche. Not even sure what BMW's usp is now ? Everyone has just about caught up on engine technology, BMW design is average/poor. Far too many models. No longer just rwd and x drive as loads of fwd models coming on stream.

I think BMW want to compete with Ford and General Motors by taking the brand down market

I like the new rendering (the white one) more than any current X vehicle... Make the X series' like that IMO.

But this seems to happen a lot.

1) Some magazine rendering comes out and looks like a dog's dinner the second time around.
2) Then we get the more stylish and usually gorgeously sculpted renderings from insiders to get us talking followed by a hell of a concept.
3) The we get the final product without the make up on, and it's alright I guess (remember the 4 series concept, the effect those lights had on everyone - too bad it was all eye shadow and contact lens only to find the day to day 4 series has glasses)

It's looks nice but so many models can't keep up. This is what the x4 should have looked like. Much nicer and aggressive styling. Imo

The rest of the world knows that BMW, MB, Audi, all make and have made, a wide range of vehicles, from utilitarian strippers to ultra luxury vehicles. It's just that BMWUSA (and MB, and Audi) only brought their fully optioned, bigger engine, fancier models to the USA and positioned them as a luxury brand. Well, that is not exactly true in the rest of the world. Yes, they make vehicles in that 'category', but you could also buy a 5-series with a small, efficient, 4-cyclinder motor, manual windows, a manual transmission, cloth seats, and no air conditioning, etc. for a very long time along side those that might have cost twice as much out the factory door like those sold to the USA. We are just getting some of the world view of these companies. It's a mindset. The rest of the world doesn't have an issue with it. Just goes to show the narrow mindedness of the typical American. A high performance, fully loaded, luxury BMW or sport version will still be available, but it will now coexist in the USA with more of the range the rest of the world has been able to access for decades. The rest of the world doesn't see this as a problem...why should those in the USA?
