Keep youre cars which you have now. I am building an e30 m3 gr a 300 HP 8800 rpm Screamer rally car right now.

For daily use hybrid is ok. But for fun no hybrid for me.

PHEV doesn't have to mean everything will be a Prius.

PHEV technology in present day is used in super efficient cars and super high performance super cars as a proof of concept. Yes, it can be used in a way to save as much fuel as possible for your daily commute. Yes, it can also be used to enhance the performance of a car (instant torque of an electric motor is no match for any combustion engine).

As the technology matures over the next decade, it's not farfetched to expect to see PHEV technology being used in all types of vehicles across the board, be they gas saving commuter cars, super cars or anything in between.

IMO, PHEV technology is really the best answer to most American driving habits. You can run all electric on your short daily commute or your daily errands without burning any gas, but you can still take a road trip without having to worry about finding a charging station like with a pure EV. Now they just need some sporty/performance oriented cars with the technology and I'd be more inclined to buy one.

Use of lightweight construction and materials are more common. 7 gears, 8 gears, ECO-mode, auto-start stop.
All the things that would've looked silly a decade back are now the norm.
None of this would've sat well with anyone in 2005...ECO-mode in a BMW? Auto-start stop to save 1-2 MPG in an M3?

We've seen quite a transformation in the past 10 years or so.
Changes across the entire car industry that seemed almost unimaginable.
But regulations are only the get tighter. As much as i dislike the whole efficiency/eco trend, it is a fact of the present & future that we have to acknowledge.

This is mostly bs but I am SO glad I got a Z4M coup to join my e9 csi coup and this year a e46 csl is in the cards or a V10. Im done with new bmw's heavy esp turbo eng fwd's crap.

Will always be a niche offer. Technology too complicated, added weight, oil price tumbling. Little real world benefit. BMW always said their cars were the ultimate driving machine. Seem to be moving towards packing cars with technology which adds to weight and leaves the cars far from being the ultimate driving machine

Thats nice and all but in real world driving the 4 cylinder turbo bmw of 2015 gets worse MPGs than my inline 6 in my 2006 330i, real world not on paper. How do I know? Ive driven both engines and seen the gas tank empty faster in the 4cyl. The epa rating of these engines is BS, Favoring smaller turbo engines when in reality they offer worse fuel economy.

And with gasoline prices falling do we really need to be plugging in our cars to save money?

I don't understand the some of the negative comments. The 3 series is a beautiful platform for plugin hybrid and I would love one for a daily driver. VW has won awards with their Golf plug in. Some comments made it seem like 320/328/335 are going away with this. With Tesla sharing their technology to the world, BMW has been busy making this affordable i8.
