Porsche GT2 RS

What is a GT2 RS? At my last track day there was one there and Gosh Damn that thing was quick. The GT3 were a tad quicker than me but wouldn't totally leave me, but this GT2 RS was a whole other league. I noticed it had a temp tag 2011 model year on it.

I wanted to talk to the guy about it, but his name was "Stephon" or something and he was wearing a Polo shirt. It would have been awkward with me and my Metallica shirt and ripped jeans.

According to Wikipedia:
On May 4, 2010, an RS variant was announced to German dealers in Leipzig. The GT2 RS develops 620 PS (456 kW; 612 hp) and 700 N·m (516 lb·ft) of torque and weighs 70 kg (150 lb) less than the standard GT2, allowing for a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph) and 0–100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration of 3.4 seconds.[7]

According to Porsche Motorsports manager Andreas Preuninger, the RS was conceived around 2007 as a skunk-works effort. The 727 code number selected for the project corresponds to one of the Nissan GT-R's lap times around the Nurburgring's Nordschleife. When the dust settled, Porsche claimed that test driver Timo Kluck had supposedly eclipsed that target by an impressive nine seconds.

Basically a turboed, street legal, race car.

One of our local driving instructors owns a GT3RS and a GT2RS. He says the only car he's ever been afraid of was the GT2RS... he says it feels like it wants to kill him I've been out in it twice and I would agree with his assessment.

A GT2 RS is basically a beefed up version of a regular 997.2 turbo but in RWD trim only...

No. That's a GT2, and a more accurate description is a GT3 with a Turbo engine. The GT2 RS is a lighter, more powerful, more exclusive, and significantly more expensive version of the standard GT2 ($270k MSRP).

I have a friend who owns an RS (pic below). In my opinion, it's the best car in the world. Very pure. That said, the RS along with all of the standard 997 GT2s, all come with traction control. So honestly, they aren't much of a handful compared to the 996 GT2s that did not come with any sort of traction control.

My 996 GT2 made around 900bhp. No traction control, 800 to the wheels, engine out back.....made it the scariest car I've ever owned. The guy who bought it from me recently totaled it.

Yes that is correct..Thank you for the clarification as I was aiming to keep things simple.

I am quite familiar with the GT2 RS(and almost every other Porsche for that matter) as I do work for Porsche and recently had the chance to Drive a good client of mine's GT3 RS 4.0 as well..

That name is actually reserved for the 930 Turbo's..

A few lawsuits against Porsche actually stemmed from those cars killing people...

The McClellan Law Firm has litigated two cases against Porsche involving the Turbo 930, in which the combination of power, turbo-lag and oversteer made the vehicle too difficult to handle for the average driver, without proper warnings and instruction.

The first case, Garrison v. Porsche, arose out of the death of a husband and father who was a passenger in a Turbo 930, when the driver lost control on a city street and went into oncoming traffic. The jury awarded $2.5 million, which was upheld on appeal. The 1983 award tied the verdict for the death of Audie Murphy, a war hero and actor, for the largest wrongful death verdict in the state of California. Following the Garrison verdict, Porsche started offering driver's training to the purchasers of its high-performance, turbo-charged vehicles.
The second case, Trent v. Porsche, arose out of the death of a husband and father, when the Turbo 930 oversteered and collided with a telephone pole. The case settled for a confidential amount.

I remember when one of our Swedish Hockey Goalies killed himself in one while he was in the US playing in NHL for the Philly Flyers. I never drove one but the car was apparently quite a handful.

"In the early morning hours of November 10, 1985, Lindbergh lost control of his customized Porsche 930 Turbo and struck a wall in front of a Somerdale, New Jersey elementary school, critically injuring himself and severely injuring his two passengers.[1] Although declared brain dead a few hours later, he was kept on life support until his father arrived from Sweden late the next day and his parents gave their permission to terminate treatment. He died on November 11 after a five-hour operation to harvest his heart and other organs for transplant."

Does my Wife's Cayenne count?

I know..I am working on it though..Too many choices..But a used 997.1 Turbo or Employee lease a New 991 Carrera GTS? Then the Cayman GTS comes into the picture as well..

The ones for sale now are all $270-300k used. They're amazing and there's on for sale three miles from me. Absolute beasts but quite a handful.

I'm now realizing, in hindsight, "Stephon's" girlfriend was driving a GT3 RS. It was white with the gray double stripes. She was very nice, hot, and spoke with an Australian accent. I wish those two would adopt me.

No sight of them this weekend yet at east track. Probably too dusty and dirty.

What is a GT2 RS?

It's the best 911 ever made and it is probably the #1 car I would want to have in my garage above all others, including exotics from Italy.

GT2 RS may be considered the swan song of the 997, although I would argue that is actually reserved for GT3 RS 4.0. However, there is no debating the punch and track capability of the GT2 RS, faster than anything Porsche had built at that time, a very special car, only 130 made for the US market out of 500 total world wide, talk about it being rare.

Attached is an article I edited (written by Pete Hitesman, one of the first lucky owners) for publishing at our web site and PCA Panorama magazine, which was well received at the time, even dealerships were storing copies at their sales offices

Oh yes. I would, and did consider it. The Viper is the better performer and I had never owned one before, so I went with it this time. However, I love Porsches. Knowing me, my next car after the Viper will probably be another Porsche. 997 GT2 or 991 TT.
