But why paint the roll hoops? Won't they get all dinged and scratched when the car rolls over anyway? Seems like a waste.

That is one particular incident that I hope will never, ever happen

I agree! Then when you get out of the hospital, you're gonna have to paint them all over again!

I recall seeing photo's on Z4UM of a red Z4 with the roll hoops painted to match the body color - it sounds a little odd but it really worked.

That said, I have never been a fan of the plastic roll hoop covers to begin with. I think that they cheapen the look of the car. I would prefer a finished metal hoop (either chromed or painted).

I've often wondered why they didn't use the automaticly extending hoops ala 330Cic. I guess it looks a little more stout and 'roadsteresque' with fixed hoops. Wasn't there an option for leather covered hoops or something?

I like the look of the hoops. Like you say, it gives it that classic roadster look. I just don't like the cheap plastic covers.

I like the plastic roll hoops. They're much more modern-looking and match the styling of the Zed. Chrome metal hoops are too 80s-looking. Old school.

It did turn out pretty well, this is a nice subtle mod - definite improvement

I was just thinking about painting mine last week - on a black car, the silver doesn't "go" as well. Don't the Ms come wtih black rollbars, leather-covered occasionally? I thought black extended leather included them...

Yeah all M's come with black roll-hoops, some are leather-covered when one orders the extended leathe option.

Do it! Paint the front grills while you're at it.

Give me fixed roll hoops any day of the week. They make a sports car look much more aggressive. Also, I'd rather not add extra weight for the mechansim, or have another thing on my car that could "potentially" fail and end up decapitated.

If the chrome/painted metal hoops look is what you are after, you could actually remove the plastic covers completely and expose the bare metal roll hoops. They are actually painted body color underneath as a result of the factory painting process. I noticed this when I removed one of the roll hoop covers at first (broke several of the tabs off, but still managed to secure the covers back ) and saw that underneath theses covers and another set of black covers , there appears to be round metal tubes that make up the backbone of the hoop. You could simply paint those or have them polished, but they are welded to the frame so removing them is not an option.

Forget painting the interior. Paint the exterior satin black...

Why don't you open those plastic covers up again and take some pics.

Hmmm... undecided on the flatness of the colour. On some cars it looks good, but on others it looks like the owner just primed the car but didn't have the funds to complete the process.

I'm planning to remove mine in the next few days to install the OEM mesh windblocker. I'll post some pics of the bare roll bars.
