Selling the cats off the car

I got some VW wagon/penalty box I don’t care much about which might be difficult to sell privately due to some minor trans issues and other typical VW problems. I’ve heard some stories on this forum about people buying the cars just for the cats and then just sending the whole car to get crushed. So I was thinking of selling the cat off this car and then selling the car to a junkyard. How much would you typically get for a cat and for scrapping the car? It’s an 09 jetta with 2.5 engine. I’m trying to figure out the most painless way to deal with it possible and hopefully not lose too much money on it. Or perhaps I should just donate it to charity, maybe that will be beneficial for my taxes?

Lol, no, but I need to make room for the n54, and trying to figure out how to quickly dispose off my unwanted car and perhaps get some money out of it. I’m going to get lowballed to shit if I post it on the Cl or other places. Perhaps the best way to go is really donating it to a charity?

I think I am leaning towards donating it to some charity (and then whoever buys it from them will sell the cats and junk this car, I think). any tips on how to maximize tax writeoff or any other kind of possible benefits?

What's the problem with selling the car if it runs and drivers? You are not going to get more than few hundred bucks for those cats, same thing with tax savings from donation. Just clean it and sell it disclosing the issues.

Yeah ^^ . You won't realize even a couple of hundred dollars from a donation. You'll fare far better if you throw it on Craigslist and sell it locally. Maybe check with a local indy VW shop to see if they want to repair it and sell it. Once I had a '72 VW bug with a shot engine that I didn't want to replace so I called the scrap yard and sold it for the steel. That may be your highest yield.

Cats at best 200, rest of car to a junkyard with no cats? Close to nothing maybe another hundred or so. Whole car to junkyard? 400 if you're lucky

Garage List
Donation value is KBB adjusted for mileage. No mystery.

I checked the kbb for this car, it’s about 4k in fair condition (it’s current state). I’m probably not gonna get this for this car simply because 5 speed mt wagons like this are 5k on my cl, and these are not like e91 wagons, these are your fwd, torque steer shitty VWs. I’ll be surprised if I even get 2k for this, and I’m really more interested in making room for an e90/e92 n54 335i than trying to get any money for this VW pos

Posted the car a week ago, so far had 2 texting conversations which went nowhere and one dude who flaked off when he was supposed to see the car. One week is not long enough I guess and I might need to lower the price below kbb fair condition price.

Did you try FB market place, I had much better luck with market place vs. craigslist lately.

Sold this sad wagon today. I said I would be surprised to get 2k for it, call me surprised then. So happy I sold it, this gives me hope that I can finally add an n54 to my stable.
