I always thought the E46 was a bit of a "chick car". The E90 is the sleeper family car.

Someone needs to inform these "fanatics" that Chris Bangle is not the only reason or person behind BMWs recent change in design styling.
Upto three designs (headed by Bangle and Burkhard Goeschel) are put forth and are voted on by the Vorstand. The final designs are more a collective decision made by the management board. The single most influential person who decides which direction BMW is going to head is Dr. Helmut Panke.

So not only is their 'hate' illegitimate (because the E90 definitely has some nice lines), it is also completely misdirected.

It's funny how misinformed fanatics can fall into the same category as religious fundamentalists/extremists.

I personally never liked the looks of the E46 sedan. It just looks too plain I find.. the "budget" BMW. Kind of like the C-class Benz. The coupe of course is another story...

I say you're exactly the same as them. Of course, I'd have to retort to a thread like that.

As idiotic as the haters are, it doesn't take away my love for E46, it was the first BMW I really got to know and learn about, still got a lot of feelings for it.

Ahhh the coupe ...........

I sometimes still wonder if I should have bought an E46 330Ci with ZHP, but then if I did I would probably be wondering if I should have bought an E90, lol. I wonder about a lot of things, too many good cars to choose from.

One thing is for sure, if the E90 coupe was out I wouldn't have bought the sedan.

I am enjoying this thread. Until the Brie and Chablis crowd "discovered" BMW during the early '80s, no one mentioned BMW sedans and styling in the same paragraph. Now it seems that all the car companies use the same CAD software and it is getting more and more difficult to tell a BMW from a Hyundai or a Pontiac without reading the badges. <g>

Of course it's a matter of taste, just like Brie. Otherwise we'd all take the train. If you happen to like Brie, it doesn't make you an idiot, unless you demonstrate that you never actually tried it. I believe that most wine is uniformly average today, like many cars. My .02.

I miss my e46 and I must say it is one of the best looking cars ever made. Well at least the top ten best looking. The e90 look is more cutting edge.

the e90 does look in my opinion a lot better than the e46 but people could envy e90 owners simply cos its the model that replaced their model.

I agree with you. Our 2004 electric red 325i was my first, a graduation present to myself after becoming 'Dr. Jeff' but in no time my wife was driving it more than me! I still love that car but an opportunity presented itself and we got our 2006 electric red E90...they look sooooo cool parked next to each other I think mine looks sportier and more agressive than the E46 but hey...the E46 was my first BMW and I'm still feelin' the love for it

I think there is more than just CAD going on here, world wide standards for pedestrian impact protection, minimum bumper heights, better fuel ecomomy, etc... are restricting design options. I think most cars now are at least partially designed in a wind tunnel. This wind tunnel design has only 1 best shape for a sedan with low drag, and everything is moving in that direction.

fredtoo said in part, "I think there is more than just CAD going on here, world wide standards for pedestrian impact protection, minimum bumper heights, better fuel ecomomy, etc... are restricting design options. " I agree. The point that I was trying to make is that though BMW has built some beautiful and classic coupes and roadsters, until recently no one who bough BMW sedans gave a hang about styling. In fact, many of us liked the fact that the cars didn't look anywhere near as capable as they were. Now , styling, partly for the reasons you mentioned, seems to be more important to a large segment of BMW's customers than the things that made the cars great including performance and relative simplicity. The Germans seem locke in a war to see which company can add the most gee whiz electrical stuff.

What do you think ?
is the new 3 really that ugly ?
Three reasons right there why I stopped posting on that forum.

E46fanatics is full of egocentric drivers and riced out 3 series. A majority of the people over there have their heads on straight, but its that minority of ricers that ruin the experience.

That goes along with the poster of the E90 I have on my wall. It says something like this: The worlds best sports sedan is better than the worlds best sports sedan is better than the worlds best sports sedan... The picture is of the 6 generations of the 3 series starting with the 2002 up to the E90. :rocks:
