I stopped doing pull-ups because of a slight shoulder injury they caused in 2019 at the age of 49. I still do dips, which are harder on the shoulders, but don't seem to have an issue with them at all. I'd suggest listening to your body, and even before that, figure out what you think you're getting from the exercise. I used to do pull-up's for back definition when I regularly maintained 12% body fat, but now I couldn't care less about back definition, so the risk isn't worth the reward.

In answer to your question I'd say it just depends on several factors.

You can do them for a long time if you have proper form, like do not fish-flop, keep tension in the back all the time, have proper grip, etc: I am almost 50 and never had injury doing them, since I started doing them properly.

I'd say never. I'd think motions with greater risk like Deadlifts a better candidate for removal. But as long as you can maintain proper form, even those should be fine at a modest weight. Snatches, though... now those are likely to get dropped sooner rather than later. A lot also has to do if you compete. Anything body weight I would think would be perfectly acceptable into old age as long as you stay relatively fit and and height/weight proportionate. All about them scaps for pull-ups.

Once you learn how to control your bladder you can stop the pull-ups and go to big-boy underpants!

Of course the older you get the harder that is to do. Might have to graduate to Depends.

Never. Pullups, dips, deadlifts, squats = for life!

To get back into any of these start with kettlebell swings, as your grip strength returns, you will find pullups easier.

I like to do 10 pullups, 9 chinups, 8 pullups, 7 chinups and so forth until I get to 1 every other day no matter what. I'm 43 in 1 month.

OP why do you feel you need to stop? Injury? I'm 68 and pull-ups in some fashion (bar or rings) are part of my routine. You should never stop exercises unless you have an injury. You may not be able to do as many reps or as much weight but there is no reason to stop.

Rather close in age to you. Pulled my trap doing pull-ups outside in the cold. Much better today. I weigh around 153.
Curious if people thought pull-ups was too risky over a certain age.

Have stopped doing some exercise like heavy deadlifts and squats and think my running is better.

I'll be 54 this year and have always incorporated 4 sets of narrow grip pull-ups at the beginning of my back training to stretch&loosen up and get things warmed up. I have a shoulder replacement so I always use strict form w all my movements

Pull-ups or any other body weight exercise IMO is always a great option at any age. Also, I’m almost 48 and have made the decision a few years ago to discontinue placing anything heavy on my back. Suit case squats for me.

57 here and I still do them. Altho I can't get four sets of 10 in anymore. Maybe 10 on the first set then lucky to hit three or four on the fourth set. It's a part of my rock climbing regimen.

What's killing me is I may have to stop running. 40 years of distance running may have contributed to some migratory arthritis in my feet.

Still mixing up some cross fit, cycling, climbing and subbing elliptical for the running trails. I reckon if I make it to my 70's I'll have to settle into some low impact yoga to stay fit.

Actually I think I do a ‘farmer’s squat’ vs ‘suitcase squat’ because I hold a dumbbell in each hand vs in one hand. Whatever it’s called. Lol

I still do pull-ups, but use one of the machines that lets you set it to reduce the weight you have to lift. It’s easy to take off whatever amount you need to be comfortable, and you still get the full arm extension down and a pull up that limbers up your back and shoulder muscles.

If you never stop, you'll never have to stop.

If you do stop, once your over 45, start back by doing chinups only for a while. Do curls, using a dumbell and hammer curls, get your biceps engaged often, make sure your core is strong from planks and various types of situps, use kettlebells to get your lats and grip strength back, then pullups won't be nearly as daunting.

At first I thought the thread was going to be about pulling up to car meets I read the title and said interesting question, let me see what this thread and comments are about lol.

Pull ups, I do them 2 times a week on my back/Bicep days, its my first exercise 5x10-12. Im 40. I also play golf 4-5 times a week and do hot yoga 6 times a week so not sure if that helps or will eventually hurt .

PS I also like doing farmers walks, someone told me years ago its a good idea to counter when you do a lot of pulls ups with them so I do. Not sure if its sound advice or not but so far so good

Pullups are the god of back workouts. Even better with a weight vest

Good for you for golfing 4 to 5 times per week! I used to do that when I was a teenager and then life happened. Do you have a membership to a course to make golfing that much easier?

Never knew that way of distinguishing which way your hands pointed. As an (ex) rock climber, I always did pull-ups. I liked to do them with my thighs flat (shins vertical) or legs completely out flat, so my whole core was engaged. Go slow and steady to make it burn more.

I miss being in shape.
