I actually broke down and bought the 400 5.6 today. I did not like the push pull zoom of the 100-400 and it is far too fat of a lens for the T2i. Once I step up to a 7 or 5D with a grip I may end up with the 100-400 when I know I will need the range and the IS. I hope the 400 5.6 is not the last lens I will buy.
Here is another 400 5.6 shot done on a tripod of course and 70% crop I think. there was some haze or thin clouds causing the glow. Quote:

I've been working on this panoramic for a few days. Photomerge in CS5 was giving me fits, and this was about as straight as I could get the image. The bottom left and right were left blank though. Content aware worked fine on the right side, but wouldn't do the sidewalk on the left, so I just did a quick hack job to get the thing done with. I'm going to go back another time and see if I can make it look better...

Yes it is a 1.6x crop the same as the T2i but it is a larger heavier body to balance out the larger lens, and when you add a grip to it it feels even more balanced. I tried it out in the store. The 400 on the end of a T2i feels like a boat anchor, but it is ok for now. I would still want a crop body no matter what for the increase in focal range for wildlife.

OOOOOOO, thought you meant it was too close (crop factor) not too BIG. Makes sense now.

^ +1. Some of the bulkier lenses come with the optional collar rings so that you can mount them on your tripod.

but what dave is saying is that, don't depend on the collar to be the balance point, the balance is very dependent on the camera body you have at the other end.
at least that's how i read it. |

play with the angle you're shooting at the glass from, it'll change the reflection a lot.
