Good question, and I've sensed the same.

My unfounded theory:

Actors, recording artists, etc., are on a "high" when on the stage; in front of a camera or microphone.

Absent that, they're bored, so they look for something to stimulate their brain.

My thought is that life has become somewhat empty for them because there isn't much they are striving towards - they can afford most things and it takes the joy out. They are hunting for something to fill a hole in their life and are only escaping that feeling temporarily through drugs / alcohol / sex etc. But it never lasts.

It's literally talked about all the time.

It's a soul crushing business with extremely long working hours, insane expectations, tight deadlines, etc. Not to mention having every aspect of your professional and personal constantly scrutinized by fans and the media.

So it's not hard to understand. To say that, I don't feel bad for anyone who pursues that in the modern age because they know what they are signing up for.

When they reach a certain age too, the looks go a bit and offers cease or maybe bit ad parts like Kevin Bacon has over here and unless they're in demand when older then what to do for them.

And that hits people differently. Take, for example, Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis from Top Gun. Granted, he's 5 years younger than her, but he's still a top star.

Tom Cruise is wired differently than any other actor in Hollywood. He filmed the beach scene in Top Gun 2 literally 10 times because he's a perfectionist.

Anne Heche is out there driving like a crack addict and did it to herself. Good riddance

I think it was a disgrace how they trashed and shamed her recently. WTF? She’s laying low and they post pics shaming her for her looks and that she wasn’t cast in the movie due to her being old and over weight?

Sean Connery might be an exception.

Exactly. It's a cruel world and a lot of folks that purred at all the attention when they were young and famous can't deal with the idea that what happened to McGillis may happen to them. It even happens with kids who are/were child stars and lost the magic (or whatever you want to call it) in their 20's. Celebrity has always been a two-edged sword that can cut you to the bone in the blink of an eye.

Yep. Kathleen Turner and Bridget Fonda come to mind.

Agree 100%. If the first movie was such a big love story for them, they should have put them together again, still going strong even if one didn't hold up as well as the other. That's what real love is all about.

I agree, Christopher Plummer was another that was in demand well past his retirement age, as far as women go they are nowadays looked at in a different light by Hollywood. It's okay for a man to be older so long as he has that rough and ready look and straight brilliant white teeth.

Unfortunately, she had the look of a girl that wasn't going to age well, and she didn't, which doesn't sell well. But it certainly would have added to the story if she had been included.

They tried this a bit with Bladerunner 2049, but it wasn't really Rachel, so it didn't really work.

I'm just glad she didn't take anyone out with her. Finally the person on drugs only takes out themself.

She was a known substance abuser with a history of weird and recently dangerous public behavior. Not exactly a good role model as a parent. Just sayin'....

Indeed.

I read her bio recently, and the parts about her upbringing and early family life were fairly hair-raising. It's not surprising that she struggled with life; no doubt living the Hollywood version of life wasn't a help in that regard, either. Bottom line: she finally found a way out. Sad.

I read about that too, and that's sad. I also know of other people (celebrities too) who had a similar upbringing but didn't end up like her.

I know it's extremely hard to rise up and out of that kind of upbringing and environment...but that doesn't mean we continue to make excuses for them. Everyone bears responsibility for themselves and imo society is forgetting that. Doesn't mean I'm not sympathetic - there's a difference.
