this and only this.

you "almost" get the qwuality of a $2700 full frame Nikon for @ $1200.

this is all you'll need for a very long time.

don't make me start posting reviews. this camera wipes the floor with other cameras in it's price range and comes damn close to cameras that cost twice as much.

I second that. The video performance on the D7000 isn't half bad either. Can somewhat compete with the 7D

If you have the money I would recommend getting the D7000 $1,000 (body) and $1,500 (18-105 kit lens).

excellent post.

with the D7000 and the $100 50MM 1.8, he'll be in a position to fully understand how to use Aperature mode to it's fullest.

it's hard to mess with aperature settings when you have a cheap kit lens.

they only stop down to 3.5 whereas the 50MM stops down to 1.8.

As a reference, I am new to photography and the D7000 was out of my price range, so I initially bought a D90 with the 18-55 kit lens ($700). Then over a period of 2-3 months add the following:

Nikon 70-300mm VR
Nikon 50mm f1.8
Tokina 12-24

Now all I need is an external flash and I think I have a good all around kit.

not too bad of a collection you got there.

....but get rid of the 70-300 VR and save up for the 70-200 F2.8 VR

Nikon Doesn't offer a f/4 Variant of that lens?

The 2.8 is mighty expensive, Should have sold my f/4 Canon and got the 2.8 II IS when it was 400$ off

I just ordered a Nikon D5100, lets see how I will like it coming from my old D80. I know I am going to miss the short cut controls on the side but I got the body for 710 and a d7000 body is around 1150. Since I don't take a lot of pictures any more I figured the D5100 would suffice, and if I don't ill sell the girly d5100 and get a d7000.

just use the $400 plus the $50 you can get for that kit lens and buy a lens for your 5100.

this.

You'll probably not outgrow your new camera body for a long time to come. When you do, you'll know it's time to switch. Lenses are an investment that'll last you a long time, plus they hold their values quite well compared to camera bodies.

I am planning on getting a nikkor 18-200 and a 35mm 1.8 for right now.
I have a 50mm 1.8 from my old D80 to bad the 5100 does not have a AFS motor. So if any ones wants it I will sell it, make me a offer.

Looks like I am going to sell my D5100 in favor of a D7000. I did not realize that the D5100 does not offer Commander flash mode. Heck my D80 from 2007 offered it. I really like playing with me strobes, and I don't want to spend 250 on the SU-800 for that compatibility.

Any reason why you are gonna get the 18-200. I've had that lens when I first picked up my D90. Used it on and off until I got myself the sigma 24-70. I've never used the 18-200 since then.

Since you have the 50mm. Get a wide zoom and a telephoto.

The moment I buy a D700, I will start to think about some prime lenses to go with it. But that will have to wait a while.
