Don't be afraid to crop. Just because you used a 400mm doesn't mean that the subject is large enough in the screen. I would have featured one of the cows. At least crop the partial one out on the left.

You under exposed. Generally anything with a lot of brown and dark should be shot at +1EV instead of 0EV, as you did. You can normalize the brightness in RAW conversion if it's too bright. (The old saw about not blowing out important highlights still holds).

For nature and with a long lens, I use ISO 800 as my default. Shutter speeds in the 1/1000 to 1/2000-sec shows up as sharper images. Also, at that ISO you can often stop down to f/8 or f/11 to gain DOF.

Here's an example, taken with the 500mm, a buck among other deer, cropped to eliminate other distrations, shot at ISO 800 and +4/3EV, f/6.3 resulting in 1/1000-sec.:

The lens helps, but you can't rely it to create an interesting image.

Dave
Absolutely, I appreciate the constructive criticism. Thanks for the info!

Edit:

Elk Cow in the Early Morning Sun by mkrepp, on Flickr

Being used to my 40D, I'm always weary of cropping. The 5d2 really helps in this area.

Doh, thanks a lot, always bugged me that I couldn't find exif on many Flickr pics.

Not from today, but I like the sky.

Much stronger with the crop.

The 5D2 will open up all kinds of new worlds to you. Try some indoor shooting at ISO 3200 for real eye opener. Night street shooting at ISO 6400 is also liberating. Here's one at ISO 3200 and -1EV to take into account the brightness of Cinderella's Castle:

Nice light and film texture. I don't know this lady, but I feel like you captured her essence.

My first camera was a MF film camera 44x44mm, so just barely MF, but I loved viewing those images, particularly vs. my 35mm SLR. I would sometime intermingle 35mm and 44mm slides in a slide show and those 44s would knock everyone out of their chairs. I've never worked with as big as your new camera, but I can imagine the feeling of an even larger format change.

I'll be developing my own in my bathroom but I don't think I'll try wet printing any time soon.

Dave, I use to have a hassleblad 6x6, but I like this body a lot more. the blad lenses have no focus ring, just metal bumps. even though this one is plastic, it just feels better.

I love it Josh. She has great eyes that you capture well, with a BG that flatters her colors.

The only fault I see is that stray, direct light cutting across her right arm and blouse. If you'd noticed that, I would have been easy to block off. If you cloned it off her arm, then most people wouldn't notice it on her blouse, I suspect.
