Cheapest Cars in America
If life threw you a curveball and you were forced to finance a new econobox... which one would you choose and why?
Not discounting the fact that purchasing a used beater for a couple grand would be a solid choice. |

I'd get a Mazda 3 for $5 more than the Elantra.

Probably the Impreza but I'd probably be miserable and rather have a motorcycle.
Though the Citroen Ami is a very interesting small car. https://www.citroen.co.uk/models/future-models/ami.html |

I think Jetta for me, but depending on the commute, I would get a Ducati for the same amount.

I am hoping HD is finally trying to become modern with the new PanAm, Sportster S and Livewire but fear it may be too late. I haven’t gone to test ride either bike. I’m too busy riding my Diavel to care lol.

Of the ones listed in the OP, probably the Hyundai Elantra. The triangular body lines kinda work for me and we've had generally good experience with our Sonata in the past. I can't really speak to anything mechanical without doing a deep dive, so this is purely from a styling perspective.

There is a couple cars in Canada almost sub 10K.
The Spark MSRP in Canada is just about $10K ($8K US). "Of course the As Show" is almost double... |

Just finished shopping econoboxes for a car for my son (college/work). Fourth car in household. Seriously considered base Jetta and Hyundai Kona.
Ended up with Mazda 3 Turbo Sedan. AWD with all the safety features and 250hp/320ft-lb for me (since I'm sure I'll be driving it occasionally). Unfortunately a little over $30K, very little dealer stock, not a lot of discounts to be had. |

3 is 22500 Impreza is 20000 Corolla is 21500 Elantra is 18000 Now I am not sure of various trim details, maybe the Civic is better equipped, but that's not small change when the Elantra is 6600 bucks cheaper.

Mazda 3 at the top of the list then Hyundai. That powertrain warranty is awesome.

For me, I'd go with the Impreza for sub-20k base vehicles.

I travel a lot for work and have rented almost all the cars on that list.
For me, the best driving/optioned ones have been Hyundai, therefore, the Elantra would be my pick.

2021 Velosater is sub-$20,000 but it has been discontinued for 2022. Now for 2022 the only Veloster available are the high-performance models and I think they are around $30,000. The upcoming Ford Maverick front-wheel-drive hybrid at under $22,000 ? |

Jetta if I HAD to choose from the list, but my e34 was 1/5th the price and a nicer car than anything on this list.

I'd spend an extra few $$$ on a Mazda3, if I had to do one of the ten then I'd go Elantra. Mazda's are some of the best looking, feeling, and driving mainstream vehicles. They look and feel much higher than their price tag and the quality and reliability is very high, not to mention they haven't resorted to ugly and over-styled design like most of the Japanese brands have.
