At the risk of boring everyone to death, yet another prairie sunset. Not much else to shoot here. I have to say, the 7D AF is sweet, but I still had some issues getting it to lock onto things in this light. I just had to make sure one of the telephone poles was in the cross hairs. But once it does lock on, the poles are sharp as hell even at 100%.

Nice colors Mark.

Yes, the AF need to be on something with contrast or detail, otherwise it won't lock.

The 7D is great at macros. Maybe you should buy a 25mm Extension Tube and start looking for wee things to shoot.

I have a 12mm extension and a 35mm F2 lens, which works well as a pseudo-macro. Might have to give it a go.

hair is pretty cool shot and shown at 100%

And with a macro, you never realize how dusty everything actually is until you start zooming in

There's nothing pseudo about it. The ET shortens the minimum focus distance, increasing magnification. Add a 1.4x TC and you'll get even higher magnification. Longer focal lengths work better. Ideally you want a longer focal length with shorter than average minimum focus distance.

Buying "macro" lenses is generally a waste of money, except they tend to be sharp in all uses. The 65mm macro is an exception that'll go to 5-times magnification, but at extremely close working distances. I love my 70-200mm and 500mm as macros and I'm thinking of buying another 25mm ET to get even closer.

Here's the 70-200mm, plus the 1.4x TC (at 280mm for this shot), plus the 25mm ET, all on the 7D:

Cool shot. So how close to the bee were you? Or more precisely, the end of the lens?

The EXIF says 1.2M, but I think it's more like 2-feet. EXIF distance info is notriously inaccurate. The specified minimum focus distance without the ET is 1.2M, so I think that I'm a bit closer, but not sure.

One great thing about using tele lenses for macros is that the working distance is generous and subjects, like bees, hardly notice you.

Francis Ford Coppola's Oscars, taken at his Winery in Sonoma. The display case had a lot of glare from every angle, but I think it came out kinda cool:

Cool.

Display cases can be a pain in the butt. Sometimes if you move around enough you can find a perspective without a glare. Don't ever hestitate to ask an assistant, you significant other or travel partner, to stand in a key spot to block the light causing the glare. Just fyi to a fellow Seminole.

BTW, I like your Charlie Ward tribute.

Thanks for the advice. I really appreciate everyone's comments as I'm trying to do my best to improve. I'm thinking of taking a class to learn more since learning on the fly can only teach you so much.

Anyhoo, another pic from my trip:

Interesting perspective of Lombard. Where were you when you shot it?

BTW, your night shots of the GG Bridge and Vegas Strip are really nice. Did you post any to the Night Shots thread?

I was actually standing on the curvy part of Lombard facing east.

I posted a couple, but the horizions were off a bit so I still need to go back and fix them.
