Oh and if you get a mac, you can make all the PC users mad anytime you bring up the fact you have one.

They are like the gay right activist, if you don't think the same way, you have to listen to them rage for 45 minutes.

=)

Pc's are great if you want to work on them and constantly to make sure they work they way they are suppose too, you can play games on them (if you play video games) and you can do everything else needed by a computer. For most people they do slow down over time and by the end of 2-3 years you will be buying a new one, If it breaks and you are not a computer expert you have to take it to a random computer store and hope they know what they are doing, and they charge you every visit.

Mac's are great if you want something that you can use and not have to work on, work's for everything that is needed by a computer and will run the same 5 years as it did when you bought it. If you do have a problem you have a store to take it too that replaces it for free without any hassles.

Windows is for new users that don't really know much about computers. OS X is definitely for the more advanced user.

I'd argue that this works both ways. It's possible that for someone who's been recently introduced to computers, a mac would be easier to learn on. To the more advanced user (again, depends on what you need the machine to do), Windows is more restrictive than Mac OS, but often has more powerful programs available.

IMO, this isn't that big an issue. I purchased a unibody Macbook (shortly after renamed MBP) when it first came out 3 years ago. I immediately installed Windows (natively, no parallels/bootcamp bs) and used windows only up until 2 weeks ago. Now I have an SSD running Mac OS and my original HD with WinXP. With Mac, I've found you pay $200-300 on top of a comparable PC. I'd lean away from Dell and towards Asus (not sure how much is available in the US).

I'm still getting used to the Mac OS (and I have plenty of linux exp.). There are certain tasks which I just can't do nearly as efficiently as I could with windows. For example, downloading mp3s, editing their tags, and adding to my perfectly organized itunes library is nearly impossible in the manner I've done it on Windows. I've tried seemingly all the tools available and they're all shit. Editing video, the whole file management process is still inconvenient to me. Still don't have some keyboard shortcuts down.

The variably-sensitive mouse is good conceptually, but my wrist feels like it's doing 2x the work it was in windows. This was my biggest complaint when I tried my friends' MBs. There is no setting native to Mac OS where you could go and switch the damn thing off. Better to just get used to it.

Battery life is better. Many things which may have required drivers/setup on windows (though this aspect has gotten MUCH better with Win7) work automatically with the Mac.

Sharing media with X360 (big deal for me as I streamed everything to my living room in this way with Windows) works perfectly with a 3rd party addition (Connect360).

Warranty service is actually pretty convenient with Mac. If you buy new, you can add 3 years of warranty by buying Applecare for ~$50 on eBay (everyone should do this), and then when your battery turns to shit in 3 years, you'll get a free one. If anything breaks (such as one of my 2 USB drives), you'll get a replacement motherboard (with new CPU, GPU, etc., etc.) Kicking myself for learning the value of it AFTER my original warranty expired.

If you have the cash, go Mac. As I've said, you can either setup a dualboot setup with Mac+Windows, use parallels/Wine to use Windows apps from within Mac OS, or just screw it and go for Windows only, as I originally did. Since the use of intel chipsets ~3 years ago, all the windows drivers you need are included on an install CD, and there will be absolutely no difference in operation between windows on the mac and any other laptop.

I'd say OSX is for the more advanced and less advanced, and the Windows people would be somewhere in between.

Then again, you can run multiple on one computer anyway, so just use them all.

a bag has a much narrower purpose. it is an accessory for carrying shit in it.
a computer is much more. it is a tool, an instrument, connection to the outside world, some of which you may never experience in person, and now it became a "bag" where people keep their lives.

As far as Macs, even my completely computer illiterate girlfriend noticed that 90% of the computers that people bring over to my place to fix, are PC's. I rarely have to fix any Macs, but when I do, it's regular things like dead hard drives, which happens on PC's just as much. Most of the time when I work on a Mac, its either to add ram or upgrade to a larger disk, or do an OS upgrade.

I exclusively use Macs myself. Not a single PC in the house. I spend enough time working on other people's computers and don't want to spend time fixing my own.

Out of 17 people in my IT department at work, 2 people use Linux and the rest are on Macs, even Windows support guys. This should tell you something....

Networks/servers/data analysis have always gone hand in hand with unix, but there is tons of professional software (esp. in design/engineering) which is exclusive to windows.

I agree that it takes a bit more knowledge, experience, and effort to keep a windows machine running smoothly compared to a mac, but for me, after 2-3 weeks, the limitations (of mac) still outweigh the benefits. Hopefully this'll change in time.

I do have a dedicated linux machine for work, so don't really care for that functionality of the mac, just home use that's been more cumbersome.

I think it's pretty obvious the vast majority of kids buy macs due to hype and image, not added programming capability. To me, the added build 'quality' is worth maybe $100. Not the $300-400 Apple charges over the competition. Not much competition with the current air though...and I bet they'll be improving it substatially for at least a few generations. Mac mini is very convenient as well for home use. Just replaced a living room pc with one...still prefer the xbox for movie/TV streaming though.

Honestly, that isn't really true all the time. I've had my current PC for about 4 years, and it runs great. Only had to work on it twice.

The PC I had before that lasted me 5 years, think I worked on it maybe a handful of times. Mac's also aren't really immune to viruses either. It's just there there aren't enough of them for the hackers to care about. Windows owns corporate computing.

Granted, if you go to the shadiest of shady websites and download your porn from Russian torrent trackers you might run into issues sooner than later. But hell, buy 2 PC's for the price of 1 Mac and then just use the other one when your first gets messed up.

To the people touting that Macs are only $300 over a comparable PC.

I'm not going to go through and configure each one as close as I can, but just based on their basic spec the Mac is FAR more expensive. Even Alienware, which is the Bentley of computers, is cheaper.

Everything is relative.

$1,000 isn't huge... when buying a car, or negotiating for a house.

When buying a $1,000 laptop, you bet your ass that doubling the price is considered huge. The kind of person that wouldn't give a second thought to paying double for anything is the kind of person that Darwin should have taken out years ago.

You pay for what you get.

Spending 1000+ on a "hood" is far more absurd then spending on it something like a computer.

Absolutely.

It amazes me how people think that people who have money must not mind spending frivolously. Some people have created a good deal of their wealth by being very smart with money. After acquiring money, being wasteful is a good way to not have any of it in the future.

It has been proven time and time again that these price comparisons are comletely meaningless, when you add other factors like software that comes with the computer, quality of components (which Dell is known for the lack of thereof. Lookup a story about Dell knowingly selling defective computers to government) and customer service.

Your $500 Pc will be completely worthless 3 years down the road. A $1600 MBP would still fetch you $1000 3 years later.

$0 - $500 = ($500)
$1000 - $1600 = ($600)

The fact that Apples cost more isn't under question. However you choose to justify it, money is money... is money... is money. Really though, I'm not the one that brought up the actual price difference argument. That was a few posts up when the Mac guys mentioned it was only $300 in difference.
