I'm going to give it a watch. I hate 90% of Facebook already. I only use it for Events, FB Groups (car stuff) and Marketplace (buying and selling car stuff). The rest I can do without.

I haven't even watched it yet and I'm terrified of the impact social media and to a lesser extent technology will have on my kids. They're only 4 (5 in 2 weeks) and 2.5 years old but still, not fun to think about as a parent.

Started it this weekend but didn't get far enough into it. From what I watched, it doesn't surprise me, scares the shit out of me, makes me glad I'm off facebook and have been considering shutting down my instagram account.
The 60 year old child, that I share an office with, has yet to figure out that social media is nothing more than a fancy marketing tool and genuinely thinks that all the notifications she gets all day are because people like her. "No bitch, it's because you haven't touched your phone in the past 5 minutes. Facebook needs to remind you to forget about your real life and get lost in their never ending cash ticker that is directly powered by your fat little scrolling sausage of a thumb." |

Watched it Monday. As other mentioned it does drag on, not sure if I even finished it, maybe like 15 mins yet. It does get you thinking, but unfortunately there really isn't much of a solution. Society relies too heavily on social media, until that lessens it just is what it is. Worst stat was the rate of growth for injury & suicide rates of young females, just terrible what the influence of social media is doing.

watched it, a lot of that stuff I figured was happening. Pretty crazy no doubt. I bet there is also another level even more in depth that we don't even know about yet that is happening.

If you liked this, Age of Surveillance Capitalism is an amazing read. It touches on the social/psychological aspects but it more focused on the structure of the entire industry and its motives. (The author spoke a few times on the documentary.)

I think I'm gonna, just haven't done it yet. Although, I just recently became single again. I may reactivate my facebook for a couple of months. I typically clean up during a 2-3 month facebook campaign.

Last week I watched the entire thing. The accuracy and agenda of the film I don't doubt. There is a silver lining to it all: discipline. What would it be like to have self control and self awareness?

I've always had a disdain for social media for this reason. It took until a few months ago for me to get an Insta and I only have a couple posts. Social media has created a lot of new jobs and income opportunities for people, but overall it has ruined society in my eyes. People are hooked on it for validation and it's polarized society severely. Our minds were not developed for this much information at our fingertips. These companies exploit our human psychology for profit. Nobody is immune from it, even the most intelligent and accomplished members of society fall for it hook line and sinker.
And as somebody in his 20s the worst thing is that girls seems completely obsessed with it and view you as weird if you don't post on IG regularly. I once asked a colleague what her hobbies are and she said "social media." Smh.

I think social media is overall quite terrible on a number of levels, but admittedly I do use FB for looking up local music, car events, and sports activities and selling things.
The one "good" thing I see about social media is it's ability to help people organize for positive reasons. I firmly believe social media will be the ultimate way people organize and over-throw and/or "adjust" governments, especially in China and certain countries in the Middle East. I will watch this show and hopefully I can get my wife too as well, assuming I take her phone away from her while we watch
