RIP Dan Wheldon
Dan Wheldon, winner of the 2011 Indy 500 was killed today in a horrific accident in Las Vegas. Please share your prayers for Dan's family as we lost one of the best today. Dan was racing for a $5mm prize today, he started 34th and if he won todays race he would split the $5mm with a fan. Dan had already moved up ten positions by lap 13 which is when the accident happened. I think the $5mm should be donated to a charity in Dan's honor. RIP Dan Wheldon, you will be missed by many. So sad.

A definite bummer. Based on all the hugs and tears you could pretty much tell he was gone long before they made any annoucement. Sad day for motor racing.

Oh man.
Edit: Just saw the crash on YouTube. Way to many cars and traffic in this race IMO. Watching it frame by frame things got too close, 1/1000 of a second mistake (not by Dan, but we're taking a fraction of a second mistake here), and then it was a chain-reaction into the thick field of cars from that point on. Seeing how it happened doesn't make it any better even if I can understand how the "why" gets all clouded and blurry. Again, just too many cars. I really feel for Dan, Dan's family, friends, crew, and the rest of the racers out there. Not a good day, not a good day at all. Last edited by Finnegan; 10-16-2011 at 06:11 PM.. |

I don't watch Indy (but I did watch Wheldon win the Indy 500), but its always tragedy when a driver dies in a race. Sad day and an unfortunate loss for the racing world. If there is anything to take away from this, is that he went doing what he loved.

I have never cried over something I saw on TV until today. Dan was one of the only guys I cared about in Indy Car. He didn't deserve this at all, and neither does his family or the guys who know him best.

Was thinking about picking up some tickets to watch the race at the Speedway.
Decided to stay at home do some work while catching the race on tv. Surreal moment. RIP Dan Wheldon |

So sad. If he won the race, he was going to split the $5 million dollar purse with a fan. What a tragic loss. My prayers go out to his friends and family. RIP Dan Wheldon.

Sad, you get used to seeing such horrific wrecks and almost always the guy survives.
I feel for his family, a two and half year old and a 7 month old, two little boys who will never see their daddy again. |

This really doesnt happen anymore. Its so odd to think that it was something that used to be associated with every race weekend, I can think of a few times when the race would continue even with bodies on the track, and the smell of burned flesh in the air. Its sad that things like this can still happen, and almost unbelievable with modern safety technology (remember Le Mans this year?) and happily they dont happen all that often. But somebody passing during sport is a serious reminder of all that gets put on the line as a racecar driver. But, thats what being a driver is all about, because if you dont go for the gap, if you hesitate for a second, then you are no longer a racingcar driver. That was said by another driver who lived his last moments in an open wheel car.
A sobering reminder for sure, but the man died living a dream, and despite the risks how can any of us say that we wouldnt do the same job if given the offer. Because god dammit I would. And thats what we need to do, learn from what happened in a freak accident and keep racing, in the spirit of a man that will always be watching over his family and the track that he called a second home. |
