The new age of hot rodding. There is a builder on the Factory Five Forum that did a Tesla powered 33 Hot Rod. All the suspension and battery packs are completely custom fabricated.

I don’t love EVs but can appreciate DIY innovation. I’m a bit disappointed at the polarization between EVs and ICE, to be honest. Cool cars are cool cars, in my opinion.

American Carroll Shelby dropped a Ford V-8 into an AC Ace roadster and created a sensation.

The UK AC Ace was an attractive roadster offered with several six-cylinder inline engines of 2-liter and 2.6-liter displacement.

In 1962, Shelby conceived of an engine swap for the Ace and managed to fit a Ford 260 cubic-inch V-8 into an Ace chassis. The result was a very fast, if somewhat crude, Cobra sports car that became a hit and was very popular for racing as well as street use.

The 260 V-8 was succeeded by a 289 cubic-inch Ford V-8 and then later, operating under the principle that nothing succeeds like excess, Shelby stuffed a Ford 427 V-8 into the Cobra.

The Cobra has spawned several replicas over the years, which I believe remain in production. (I believe we have a replica Cobra owner on the board, so he can feel free to chime in.)

UK manufacturer Sunbeam was inspired by the Cobra and did their own conversion of the Alpine roadster into the Ford V-8-powered Tiger roadster.

Yes, indeed! There are several replica options of Shelby's Cobra on the road and still in production. In fact, Shelby American still produces the Cobra today as a "continuation" of the original cars. Another manufacturer, Superformance, is also licensed to sell continuation cars. These all carry CSX-#### serial numbers, which the original cars also carried.

CSX2000 series - all 260, 289 and Coupe cars. Both "slab side" and "FIA" roadsters.

CSX3000 series - all 427 cars, street and race

Continuation series: CSX4000 (427), CSX1000 (special run aluminum body 427), CSX 6000 (4000 ran out of numbers), CSX7000/CSX8000 - 289 slab side and FIA

All other replica cars use their own serial number system, but will not have a number starting with CSX unless someone is trying to pull a fast one.

Common replica manufacturers:

- Unique Motorcars
- E.R.A. Replicas
- Everett-Morrison Motorcars
- Shell Valley Classic Wheels, Inc.
- Lone Star Classics
- B&B Manufacturing
- Hurricane Motorsports
- Backdraft Racing
- Kirkham Motorsports
- Factory Five Racing

Kirkham, Superformance, and Shelby American still offer hand-formed aluminum bodied cars, but be prepared to pay well north of $200k for one of those. Superformance and Backdraft make complete turn-key cars starting at around $90k. Factory Five Racing makes the number one selling replica kit that you build yourself starting at just a little over $20k for a kit (no running gear). Based on what I know from building a Factory Five kit and following the builds of many others, the typical range to complete a Factory Five kit is somewhere between $45k and $75k.

I've been lucky enough to own a Factory Five Cobra and a 1967 Sunbeam Tiger. Both were crude fun cars to drive. I wish I'd have hung onto the Tiger as it was the last year of production, less than 500 produced and if I recall mine was #417.

Around 1976-77, I was stationed in the Navy in Guam with a sailor who owned an original Cobra (which was back in the States somewhere.) I suppose back then it had not attained the holy icon status that a real Cobra has these days, but I was extremely impressed.

In the driving sense, I suppose one of the modern replicas is superior to the early 1960s original Cobra.

Super nice and I love that color.

I've mentioned it here before that my first car was a Bug. A used 1968 that was 5 years old. I was 18; couldn’t afford a car ‘til then. I loved that car.

The four door makes a lot more sense.

In terms of crash survival, any bug is a death trap by modern standards, I think.

It actually looks good too (at least imo) and you can’t always say that when a car goes from coupe to sedan.
