Exclamation Engine cuts out and ASC lights up and get a MAF circuit code

I have a 98 540i. The other day while driving, the cars engine cut out for only a split second. It was almost like I tapped the breaks quickly. It started to get worse (happen more often) and then noticed that the ASC light came on on the dash. When the car was idleing I opened the hood to see if the ASC cable was engaging when the car would miss/ cut out. The cable did not move so made me think it was something else causing the engine to cut out. The engine light eventually came on as well. I checked the code and got a code for a bad mass air flow circuit. Any idea's? Would a bad mass air flow sensor cause the ASC light to come and the car to cut out for a split second? Please help, I do not want to buy a new mass air flow sensor if that is not the issue.
