Question I'm seriously thinking other than an E90

I'm pretty sure most of you know that my E90 was totalled a couple weeks ago by some dream crusher JAG in a Lexus. If you missed it, you can see it here http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16946 and on page 2 is where the horrific pictures are. The 330i was the first really nice car that I had. Never once did it see an automatic car wash, cotton towels, or a sponge...rather pure sheeps wool, microfiber, and good ol' elbow grease and was always the one parked at the very end of the parking lot.

I am having problems with the insurance co. getting a fair value of the car, right now 42k with tax. I cannot find an e90 in the USA with the same options that I had (and the only options that I will settle for since it was ordered just how I wanted it). If I want a new one, I will have to pony up another $8,000 out of pocket (with tax, etc). I was thinking of buying something different than an E90 until the M3 comes out. As of right now it is a toss up between the 2006 Porsche Boxer tiptronic with 800 miles for 47k, or
http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...17&aff=chitrib

a 2005 corvette Z51 6sp with 15,000 miles for 41k
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1364157

The corvette is something that I have been dreaming about since I was a little kid and something that at this stage in my life, not married, no kids, 24 yrs old... I can have a car that is impracticle and something that I might not be able to own again until I retire 40 years from now! I really love BMW and I know that I will get into one again very shortly; just try not to kill me for making this decision. I want to get a poll to see a different opinions on this mindset. I will be buying one of these cars this thursday.

If you're gonna ditch the 3 (for a while ), go with the Boxster.

I sat in one at the Dallas auto show a couple of weeks ago and I just kept thinking I would never get tired of looking at the gold Porsche insignia on the steering wheel. It just elicited such a sense of class and performance. (I was after all just sitting, not driving )

I voted for the Corvette due mainly to the fact I drove one this past weekend in Vegas and came away quite impressed.

Not to be an ass or anything but you do know its a Boxster and not a Boxer right? Boxer refers to the type of engine the car uses.

yeah, sorry about that....just a typo. Boxster, and the sound that comes from the engine is intoxicating! I've never heard anything like it, can cannot even begin to imagine what a 911 s would sound like.

Re: the Corvette - I drove one about 6 months ago and it was very impressive. But, I prefer more compact cars. But, then again, I must say the Corvette has really good looks right now.

I'm confused why you would have to pony up another $8,000!?! Especially since I remember you saying that you had G.A.P. insurance too.

Anyway, a 2-seater is a much different car than a 4 door sports sedan. It would be impossible for me to have my daily driver only capable to carry one passenger. The corvette and boxster won't have any real trunk room either. If you can legitimately live without than kind of practicality (which I highly doubt), get the C5 'vette. It handles great and the Nav is better than the one in the e90, IMO.

What's the story of the Porsche? I was just looking at the CarFax. Two owners in Arizona from November to March? And only 85 miles driven? What's up with that?

I would suggest purchasing the Corvette. You will surely appreciate a quality automobile after driving that GM POS.
Especially if it has some miles on it. Then the rattles will start. I hope you never need to see Mr Goodwrench.

I'll be the first to tell you that no car on the market today will offer as much raw performance per dollar as the Corvette does, whether the base C6 or the Z06. You'll certainly have some fun eating 911s and M3s at the track and on the street.

I'll also be the first to tell you that Corvettes generally have very poor ergonomics (I'll never get over the awkward position of the shifter in the C6 - too far from the driver's torso, too close to the knee - though not as bad as the Viper), poor build quality, and are nowhere near the most driver friendly car on the road. Might be fun to take an occasional spin in, but fun to live with? No thanks.

It's always difficult when something gets smashed, because even if you get another E90, it is never really the same.

Go with what feels right. Sometimes a change is better, but I'm sure a lot of people will be biased towards the E90, as I am indeed myself!

...but the Corvette looks a cracker!

I have owned both and currently drive 03 Boxster 2.7 L. Waiting on a new 330i delivery. Until you actually drive the Box, you'll never know how good it is. The newest (post 05 models) are much quicker and refined with a great new interior. I've owned scores of cars (53 yrs. old) and the Porsche has been the most fun of any of them, including a 911. The vette (C5) was great straight line car, but common and poorly built. Don't buy the Boxster if you don't want to be noticed. The C6 is much improved but about as close to a Porsche as a Cadillac STS is to a BMW 330i. Both are expensive to fix but warranty on Porsche is much better. And storage/trunk space in the Boxster blows away the Corvette. Remember, the Porsche has trunks front AND rear. Good luck and post pix when you get the new ride home.

i agree, NONE of the above. Corvette is beautiful and fast as hell, no doubt, last year i may have told you to go for it. But with gas prices the way their going, and no sign of turnaround anytime soon, hell no.

I never liked Boxers much for some reason. Get a 325i. It'll be cheaper and better gas mileage. Otherwise get an Acura TL or Lexus IS maybe.

The Corvette cannot be beat dollar for dollarfor raw power and a stupid-good supercar experience. I test drove one, and loved the beast-like quality of the expreience.

But it totally lacks practicality and refinement. The emergency brake lever looked like it came from a Cavalier, for example.

If you can do without the practicality and refinement, get the 'Vette. If you can't the Boxter or E90 would be my next choices.

A manual Boxster would be wonderful, although if you have a bike then I would stick with the E90. Neither the Boxster nor the C6 will match the bike. And both will have much higher total costs over the 2 years you are waiting on the M3.

All of you have some great arguments for one or the other. Tl boy, I really don't think that any japanese car can come close to the intoxicating driving experience that a porsche can deliver. I also know that GM in itself has had quality problems in the past, but personally I think that it is changing for the better. The only problem is that it took them 50 years to figure it out and people still have this stigma about them. The vette is their halo car...my uncle has been a GM mechanic for over 20 years now and says that it is pretty rare to see a vette with a serious problem. Trying to compare the two is like saying a porsche is when a doctor uses precision tools to remove a finger, while the vette uses an axe....both get the job done, but in different ways. Bimmer4me, I lost the 8,000 on the down payment, etc. GAP insurance only covers the remaining balance on the account...The car was worth 42000 and I owed 41,800--so no remaining balance (maybe next time I wont put anything down on a car).
