Since new movies almost always are terrible now - I’ve been watching old westerns with my boys 12 & 6. I’m starting with all the John Wayne films both in color or not.

In addition to John Wayne westerns - what else is suggested?

The Thin Man is excellent.
Most Cary Grant movies are light and fun.
Anything Hitchcock
Lots of classic westerns, but Shane is my favorite by far.
The Doris Day + Rock Hudson movies are fun, still. Especially if Tony Randall is in the cast.

Also Jack Lemmon did a ton of movies and some are really good.
The Apartment
Paper Tiger
Avanti (I think that’s the title, set in Italy, father has passed and he goes to retrieve the body for a mega funeral in the states, but it doesn’t quite work out that way).
Some Like it Hot (Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis co-star)

The original Magnificent Seven with Yul Brunner and Steve McQueen is a great western. It is based on the Seven Samurai which I've heard good things about but never saw so I can't recommend.

I also liked the remake of the Magnificent Seven with Denzel Washington.

Both good westerns in my opinion.

For a more recent Western, I thought this was pretty darn good!

Saw that and liked it. It is a remake; the original stars Van Heflin and Glenn Ford. Didn't see the original.

Not Westerns, but these old flicks are hysterical and would be age appropriate for your kids.

Arsenic and Old Lace, Harvey.

The greatest western of all time. Just look at the cast. Directed by John Ford. Kid friendly.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056085...%2520west%2520

"Filmed in panoramic Cinerama, this star-studded, epic Western adventure is a true cinematic classic. Three legendary directors (Henry Hathaway, John Ford and George Marshall) combine their skills to tell the story of three families and their travels from the Erie Canal to California between 1839 and 1889. Spencer Tracy narrates the film, which cost an estimated $15 million to complete. Westward expansion shows scenes of the Indian's sorrow, the white man's greed, river pirates, outlaws, lawmen, and life and death on the Western plains. Dozens of marquee names worked with over 12,000 extras, 630 horses, hundreds of horse drawn wagons, and a stampede of 2,000 buffalo. The human cost of the concept of Manifest Destiny is revealed in all its colorful and violent glory. How the West Was Won garnered three Oscars, for screenplay, film editing, and sound production."

Silverado (PG-13) is not bad for a western made in 1985.

An all time favorite around our house is Rear Window.

I seem to remember They Call me Trinity being a pretty good flick. Had some funny scenes. Although some movies don't age well, so who knows if it's still worth watching.
