New MICHELIN Pilot Sport CUP2 CONNECT tire Faster, longer-lasting performance, 100% Connect Ready

June 10, 2020

The new MICHELIN Pilot Sport CUP2 CONNECT tyre has been designed with an integrated container intended to receive a sensor, which make it the first 100% Connect Ready tyre on the market. Users then just have to insert the MICHELIN Track Connect solution sensors in order to take advantage of the multiple functionalities of the solution and optimize their performance even more during track days. Dedicated to 80% on track and 20% on the road, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport CUP2 CONNECT tyre remain versatile for an everyday use while offering high potential on track.

• Gain of 7.29 seconds after 10 laps (2)

• Designed for high performance and sports vehicles

• 41 sizes available for more than 180 vehicle models

• Connectable with MICHELIN Track Connect in all dimensions

• World premiere : the BMW M2 CS will be the first car fitted with MICHELIN Pilot Sport CUP2 Connect tyres as original equipment

New architecture for more stability and more security

To combine both excellent feeling and high efficiency, the new MICHELIN Pilot Sport CUP2 CONNECT tyre combines in its construction two polyester plies, two steel plies and a polyamide ply. It also benefits from several advanced technologies :

Wavy Summit Architecture: waving of the summit plies by addition of rubber under the structural steel cable of the tyre, giving the advantage of reducing response time and increasing the feeling of sportiness behind the wheel.

Dynamic Response Technology: high density aramid and nylon hybrid belt which promotes driving precision and tyre behavior under load. This belt, which is located just below the tread, is both very resistant and light. Thus, at equivalent weight, the associated nylon and aramid are five times more resistant than steel.

These technical improvements allow higher cornering speeds and excellent stability at high speeds. On the track, this also results into better lap times (2) and more safety on the circuit and on the road.

Seems cool, maybe I missed it, but wonder when these will be ready to order in the aftermarket.

Will these sensors finally tell me why my left front tire is always hotter than the rest of my tires.

For everyone reading the news over and over again to find the relevant missing info... It's a pressure and temperature sensor.

So it's basically an internal temp and pressure gauge. I wonder if it will be any more accurate than the built in TPMS. Perhaps it can tell us temperature across the width of the tire, which is helpful on the track. Maybe datalog so we can see when the tires were too hot during a lap. That could help with tire management. I wonder if we can sync to AiM Solo, Harry's, or RaceChrono etc. It would be nice if we could capture that data directly instead of being limited to the Michelin app.

I don't think it can measure across the tire. The sensor is pretty small.
Here's a little overview on it from MotoIQ (a bit down the page).

Pocket for the sensor on the inside of the tire

Seems like an interesting gimmick, will be curious to see if it actually works. The standard tpms are terribly inaccurate for pressure and temp

Wow. I assume there will be a counterweight on the opposite side of the tire so I won't need to add wheel weights to balance that out.

The reason the left front tire is always hotter is because of the auxiliary radiator that's in the wheel housing. My left front tire temp on my M5 is always hotter also and that's why at least on the M5.

It can hopefully provide much higher sample rate data than TPMS or BMW’s temp sensors. Could be somewhat useful then.

I have the same issue in my M5. Left front tire always runs about 10F hotter than the other 3 tires after they warm up. Now I know it's normal!

So this is an additional sensor that provides the same information on a tire as a TPMS sensor? Maybe Michelin's sensor is more accurate and faster at providing real time data than the TPMS, we shall see. That said the app has terrible ratings in the app store.

Seems kind of neat, but need to see it in action.

Installing the sensor is like putting on a condom, lol.

It should connect with Siri
Siri, please add 2 psi to both rear tires, and order my usual pizza while you're at it.
