The gap between the E46 to E90 was far bigger than the E90 to F80. In fact, the e90 was the biggest jump in power of any M3 which makes it the most impressive. Also it's force inducted of course it's going to have more torque please stop defending the obvious. Supercharge an E92 and watch how fast your S55 runs out of steam. I don't even have an M it's just annoying to watch everyone fight over a car.

F80 sounds extra bad. I had the mpe and from outside it sounded pretty good. Inside the car,sounded much better after I disconnected tge fake sound. It sounded like a proper inline 6, albeit muffled.

But clearly the e92 takes the cake and then e46.

When I say F80 sounds like shit, it's not that I don't like how turbo cars sound but it's the sound engineering that went into it that sucks. Turbo cars can sound awesome.

MotorTrend LT test of F8x M3 panned it hard on many things, including exhaust. That said, I don't know of any I6 that's going to beat an S65 in exhaust sound, especially at cold start up Least none that I've ever heard and I've been lucky enough to have owned E92 and E46 M3's..

I've been M3 super fan boy for years and have been disappointed in most of the F8x M3/M4's I've been around, including those with performance exhausts.

Hell, I thought my M235i with MPE sounded better to be honest

Me too. The sound of the new M3 does suck. Performance numbers though so shine on that new M3/M4. I guess maybe BMW should have went the AMG route and did a V8 with Twin Turbos on them

Having owned most versions of the M3, I agree. I like the way my F82 sounds just as much as I liked my E9X M3's and E46 M3's. I asked a female with no knowledge of cars, M-engine characteristics, etc. what she thought, and she liked the F80's sound [based on the video] the best. I guess it's all a matter of what your ear prefers. There's nothing wrong with the F8X to me.

It's not really an accurate comparison. The E36, E46, and the E92 had modified exhaust systems. The F80 was completely stock.

If you really want to compare the sounds of all these cars, you need to have them all in stock form to have a common baseline.

The E92 also sounded a bit strange. I don't know if the check engine light had anything to do with that, but I wouldn't be revving the hell out of my car if was throwing check engine codes

lol the female probably just judging the sound of the car based off the looks of the car. what ever looks the newest and most expensive will win!

if M went the way of the AMG the M3 would be to perfect of a car.

it seems that car makers these days like to screw up some part of the car.

the C63 has one of the best turbo engines in recent history, yet it uses the same old lame transmission as the last generation.

M has the transmission, but the engine is what lacks.

Thanks for the post OP I enjoyed the vid especially in 1080p50fps. If everyone else wants to get into a debate, no BMW M car is extraordinary sounding (although the e60 m5 v10 is probably the best of M car sounds). The winner of the sound contest is a Porsche flat 6 or any Ferrari v12, end of story. But then again you're paying the premium for those sounds. BMW M cars are so well rounded and great at everything else though.

As mentioned, it would be nice to hear, the sound of each with a stock exhaust and instead of red line revs with no load per a fast food parking lot kid, real acceleration at speed up and down gears. This both inside and out of the car.

Cool to see all the M3's in a single video. Not really comparing apples to apples as some appear to have modified exhausts.

Sound is a big deal to me in my buying decision, its #1 for me - ever take a ride in a Maserati GTS - so happens all the cars that sound awesome are enthusiast cars of course . After owning 01 M3, 05 M3, 08 M3, 08 M6, 11 M3, went back to an E60 M5 recently for the S85. Tried the e-race on the E92 but the V10 F1 sound... Nothing else like it...

Stock exhaust note has never been a strength of the M3. Even on the E92 the exhaust itself is pretty weak, the highlight is the intake noises. Even on the E60 M5 I just picked up, the stock exhaust is super weak thus added the corsa.

I had a Corsa on my E60 M5 as well and man it was freaking awesome. I loved the sound on cold startup (better than F80 with valves open on cold startup, by a hair) and WOT was just F1 insane! Enjoy man!

Ummm ok. Throw some upgrade turbos, tune, and meth on an f80 and watch it kick the supercharged e92s ass
