There will never be another.

This was my dad's stable back in 2004-ish. He's still got the M Roadster, but god damn did BMW make some PURE drivers cars back then.

His e46 vert was a little heavy, but there was NOTHING like it on the road!!

Damn, your dad had the trifecta dude.

Some might say BMW was at the height of their powers in the early 2000's, with the E39 M5 that is basically lauded as the best mid-size performance car ever.

The E46 M3 with its fender flares, proportional excellence, legendary S54 hp-per liter, high rev nature and chassis dynamics BMW had two of the best cars in the world at the same time.

BMW was consistently rolling seven's and sent the competition and perceived competition back to the drawing board because class was dismissed.

+1. All were great but the E9x will stand the test of time as something really special. A lot less were produced than the E46.

I think you really have to own every generation to really be able to appreciate and know first hand which one 'you' think is the best. Often times people missed the opportunity to actually own a specific generation and they end either discounting that gen M3 or they go the other extreme and they mystify it and build it up more in there heads than is reality.

My E46 with my wife driving my E36 in the opposite direction. In with the new out with the old picture.....

Great era for BMW (& especially for BMW M).
Though not perfect, as people tend to forget the Bangle E65/66 7-series was conceived in that same era.

Still, there was something really special about the dynamic duo of the E46 M3 & E39 M5.

Me & my buddy's from before.

The E65/E66 were the culmination of many years of Chris Bangle getting the Board of Directors to believe a change in philosophy of BMW cars, that now VW's and Daimler now adhere to, the same sausage in different sizes school of design.

There are still styling elements from the E65 7 Series used in cars today.

He was right and car designers around the world knew it then and know this now. It was so different people didn't know what it was, but it was the future.

It was a revolution in design.

And you are correct in stating that the E46 M3 and E39 M5 were special and greatness oozed through the sheet metal.

Don't get me wrong, i'm quite familiar with the history and as far as sales goes, it was a success & the long term affects it had on the auto industry changed the game forever.

What was meant from that statement, though, is that more often than not, we get certain BMW fanboys saying the early 2000s was perfect.
And its the same fanboys who also tend to be the ones most critical of the E65/66. Its just rather ironic.

I have mine listed for sale on the boards. Thinking of an M2. Over the weekend I open the garage and there she is. I'm really wondering if should sell a pretty car just to get a faster ugly one. The E46 M3 is IMO the best looking M3, so far. These are great shorts that BMW are putting together.

I think I had a good idea of what you meant, and most people with me included tend to forget the E65 came out during this time.

We romanticize the older cars we love like a lot of things, and probably forget about the ones that were ground-breaking due to not being our focus at the time.

I looked at various E46 M3 Cabriolets for a while before I got my Z4 this year.

Lots of them around but also lots of them in bad shape.

The e38 was the contemporary to e46/e39 7 series. Traditionally, BMW introduces a styling language in the 7, then it moves to the 5, then to the 3, then they reset with a new 7.

E38 overlapped 7 years of e39 production and 4 years of e46 production.

e38 had e46/e39 electronics/engines/tranmissions/interior/exterior styling language. Many parts are interchangeable between the 3.

E65 ushered in the e60/e90 era (iDrive and all).
