2020 College Football Thread

Well, I hope we need this thread. Right now, I’m not sure there will (or if there should) be a season. Ivy League cancelled fall sports today. Power 5 conferences huddling to figure out what to do because decisions need to be made fairly soon. I’m not optimistic right now. What does everyone else think?

I think it's unlikely but there is so much money on the line who knows what they will decide...

Big 10 going conference schedule only. I expect the others will follow suit shortly. Gives more time for a miracle to make COVID go away. Which it won't.

If a large group of people are refusing to wear masks and maintain social distancing for a short period of time, it's not going to slow the virus to a manageable level. No matter how much I want the NFL and College Football to start I'm starting to think that they'll be played in the Spring.

Don't disagree but moving to the spring then throws the next fall into question. Will players, coaches and teams play until May/June (hypothetical) and then start playing again late August much less camp/practice starting in June/July? Thinking the Big 10 model in likely, conference only and a shortened schedule in empty stadiums. At least the schools would generate TV revenue to try and get through to 2021.

I’m also not sold on a spring season because (a) COVID will still be around - problem not solved and (b) the best players will opt out to prep for the NFL draft, something already happening with bowl games.

The Ivy League cancelled all fall sports, including football.

My guess is that it's more than 50% likely the Big 10 will cancel football this year.

We have been football season ticket holders at a Big 10 school for over 35 years, so will just wait until 2021. We upgraded our seats this year, so it's something to look forward to in 2021.

I get a handful of emails per week from my alma mater on the topic of football. It tells me they have no idea what they are doing as to the status of the season, and seem petrified of financial impact of the likely outcome, cancellation.

It seems like it's time for higher education and associated athletic departments to join the real world and cut costs to improve competitiveness.

My son plays football at Notre Dame. They are due to start on field practices on July 22nd. As of now, their games with Wisconsin, USC, and Stanford have been canceled. They do have 6 games vs ACC due to conference affiliation. I'd love to see the season kick off but it's looking bleak. But I agree, NCAA football season generates a ton of revenue.

Seems like all the healthy athletes don't even have any symptoms. Don't remember any of the pro athletes that have tested positive having any complications.

U-Michigan just announced "there will be no season tickets" in 2020.

Furthermore, if games are played, fans if allowed will be greatly reduced in number. Game tickets will be on a per-game basis.

Michigan State, not that I care, are on a 14 day quarantine. That's why I don't think we'll have football this year.

Miami had 3 guys test positive, cancelled workouts for a day but then returned the next day minus those 3 guys and anyone they were in contact with. Michigan State, as I understand it, also had only a few guys positive. So, understanding we don’t know the differences in circumstances between them, very different results. But as trends continue to be negative for the population at large, some of the talk about 10 game seasons does seem delusional right now.

ACC announced scheduling model for 2020. Seems optimistic but we’ll see.

The season’s first games will take place the week of Sept. 7-12

The 2020 scheduling model includes 11 games (10 plus one: 10 conference and one non-conference)

All non-conference game opponents, selected by the respective school, must be played in the home state of the ACC institution, and all non-conference opponents must meet the medical protocol requirements as agreed upon by the ACC

The 11 games will be played over at least 13 weeks with each team having two open dates

There will be one division

Notre Dame will also play a 10-game conference schedule and be eligible to compete in the 2020 ACC Football Championship Game

All television revenue for the 2020 season, including Notre Dame’s home games broadcast by NBC, will be shared equally by all 15 institutions

The ACC Football Championship Game will be played on either December 12 or 19 at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, and will feature the top two teams based upon highest conference-game winning percentage

All 15 teams will continue to be part of the ACC’s bowl selection process; should Notre Dame win the ACC Football Championship Game they would be eligible for the Orange Bowl, if not selected as a College Football Playoff semifinal team

The 2020 ACC Football week-by-week schedule and television selections will be released in the future
