So I think it was by issues .

It was both new drive shafts fitted so could be an internal gearbox noise travelling through a shaft, yet the RB pit monitors couldn't detect anything so may have been something else like a balancer shaft out of sync?

yeah that was a clown show.
Even the notification that it was under investigation (and that speculations started it would only be 5sec) came far to late.

That should be noticed and decided within 5minutes or so, so a team/driver can change their strategy on that.

I think now more mistakes are made than under Masi. Especially last year Suzuka when a recovery vehicle was on track when cars (Gasly at least) were still driving on track at speed to catch up to the safety car.
Especially since the last F1 death (Bianchi) was also on Suzuka under similar circumstances (Bianchi drove into a recovery vehicle)
This lead to the decision to not rotate race directors anymore. Clearly this was a big mistake due to inexperience imho. And Freitas has left the stage.
